new from Central PA

Hi there. I've been lurking around here for some time. Thought I'd say hello. I’m not new to forums. I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey and am a member of the ODYCLUB forum.
<O</O

Anyway, I've got a 97 Ranger 4.0 L 4x4. It's got some 178,000+- miles on it. Standard transmission.
Check engine light has been on for nearly 3 years. I checked them when they first came on back then. DTC's were as follows:
P0171 - system to lean, bank 1
P0174 - system to lean, bank 2
<O</O

It has 3 O2 sensors. Two upstream of CAT on each exhaust leg and one downstream of CAT. I replaced both upstream O2 sensors 1.5 years ago. It didn't solve my problem. I was playing with it over the weekend and thought maybe I'd try to "fix" my problem. When I plugged it into the scanner, I came up with two DTC codes listed above plus a 3rd DTC now as well:
P1443 - Evap Control System, control valve malfunction<O></O>
The scanner also revealed that the fuel trim for bank 1 and 2 are set to -100.6%! yes NEGATIVE 100%. LOL.....as it sat there and idled away!
Here's the interesting thing. When performing the diagnostic, I noticed that I had no reading from all THREE O2 sensors at all. According to the scanner, it was like they weren't even there! Keep in mind the engine was hot so there should have been a reading. So I got under the truck and checked all the wiring upstream of the sensors to make sure all was plugged in (which it was). I didn't find any loose connections anywhere. I have a hard time believing that all 3 sensors are dead (especially given the fact that I replaced 2 of them). I probed the harness's engine off, ignition set to "on"). Each sensor has a 4 wire harness. I get 12v on 2 of the pins and 0.2 and 0.3v on the other two. I find it strange that all 4 pins are carrying current. I would have assumed that one would have been a ground. I realize the one of smaller voltages should be a "reference" voltage (I thought it would have been like 5v). At least one of the 12v pins would be the heater voltage (to aid it in reaching 600 deg F quicker). Is it possible that exhaust system itself is the "ground"? If that's the case, could it be possible that it's not grounded now and I won't get readings from all three because of it? Is the PCM shot?

I plan on plugging her back in to the scanner tonight or maybe tomorrow and running an actual circuit check on each O2 sensor.
<O</O

I've been searching around here. I've found a few threads pointing out that the fuel rail to manifold gaskets are common issues. I also found the TSB. I also found a thread describing my 1443 DTC scenario to a T and am fairly confident that the issue is with the charcoal canister.
<O</O

It's the O2 sensor that has me baffled. Your thoughts?

Hi herhaus, welcome to FTE!

Try posting your questions in one of the site's tech forums or perhaps do a search for answers to your questions. Maybe try your search here,,, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum35/

Also visit the local PA chapter of FTE at this link,,, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum182/

Maybe we can meet at the 2009 MidAtlantic meet at the All Truck Nationals in Carlisle:0

Hello herrhaus,

Welcome to FTE. Your in the right place for forums and discussion. If you notice the supporter banner next to some of the members names, that is a paid membership in Club FTE. In the Club FTE forum the coversation is a bit more lively and adult. Many differences of opinion, but a good group. There is also the general forum for non-truck related conversation, that is , like the rest of the site, free. We try to maintain the 8 year old rule in the general forums, if you don't want your 8 yr. old to read it, don't post it. There is also a Pennsylvania Chapter you can join. The chapter is your home base, it belongs to the members for getting to know others from their home state, their general area, arranging get togethers, buying, selling, swapping, or just giving away parts. It's a great way to make new friends that share a common interest. If you look in the chapter threads you will notice different events that are planned for chapter members, join in and become one of the guys/gals, there is a thread in the chapter with instructions on how to join. Post up and introduce yourself , where your from, what you drive, pics of your truck, general chit-chat and in some cases, just plain ole' frivolous nonsense or a joke or two. When you reach 25 posts your PM's will be activated so you can communicate off the board with other members through the PM function. Check out the thread about our annual Mid-Atlantic Ford Truck Club-FTE get together in Carlisle, Pa. at the All Truck Nationals. FTE took third place for club participation in '08' and Pennsylvania took first place for chapter participation, it would be nice to have you join up with us at the next one in August. Looking forward to you joining the chapter, seeing you on the boards and hooking up at one of the meets.

Joe
