Whats with this friggin thing! I'm always putting it back on
I cant belive I hadnt lost it yet, it seems to undo itself one or two times between oil changes. When I put it on I feel the rubber piece seal and give it a clockwise turn, but it seems to undo itself.
Maybe its just telling me it needs a flush . What fluid should I use? full synthetic or just Dex/Merc?
Most say the synthetic makes for a quieter pump. I would go that route myself the next time I change mine out. I have some left over from my trans overhaul.
LOL! Might be one of them Gremling crawling up and undoing the cap. Hmmm, I'd better go check mine...
Yep, I've read that the syn is a little quieter too. Not too noticeable though.
10-4, I was just wasnt sure on the "power steering" or "ATF" part. I use valvoline full syn. power "steering fluid" in my rock crawler / off roader just because the steering takes alot of abuse on the rocks and the syn. seems to hold up better than dino. At the same time I understand that power steering fluid and atf are about the same animal and one could be used in place of another.
I'd say since your cap is loose fitting that you should get an aftermarket replacement cap at your local auto parts chain on the "HELP" rack, my experiance has been that THEY fit too tight, and may just be the answer for you.
I have the exact same problem! I guess I've been lucky and found the cap just sitting on the frame rail every time (about 10) before I decided to become creative. I've resorted to zip tying the cap onto the pump, going over the top through the trough in the middle of the cap. Mine started doing it around 80k and has been doing it ever since. The first time I noticed my reservoir being open to the elements forced me to do a Mobil1 Syn flush. I wasn't experiencing any noise, but figured it was the right thing to do.
Just be sure to use ATF fluid on our trucks.. I believe it is becuz of the Brake Booster and the Power Steering using the same oil..
Yep -- if you put in PS fluid, your pump will REALLY howl. My Ranger's PS pump howled like a banshee the whole time I owned it. I drove it up to 92k before trading it on this one. I think some pumps are just noisy. I knew about the syn PS fluid trick, but never tried it. Then this one started making noise, so I flushed it out with Mobil1 Syn ATF and it quieted down noticeably. I think it's worth doing.
