Ok,new glow plugs about 10 mos. ago,GPR is working(int. light gets brighter after about 90 secs. give or take a little) but when its cold out(only when its cold out)I get heavy fuel smoke( stinky so I know its a fuel smoke) at start up. It dont really have to crank any longer than usual but smokes alot. I checked the wires to the GP's on the drivers side and all were connected, havent checked the pass. side yet,how often should GP's be replaced? Also both batts. were replaced at the same time(the terminals on the drivers side are a little loose but its never failed to start.Im running Rotella synthetic oil(fresh oil change),fuel filter might need to be changed, air filter definately needs to be changed.Any suggestions, sorry for the long post.

Hey Phil,
Have you checked your batteries and connections? Low voltage or corrosion could cause this.
Yeah,The batts are about 10 mos. old,and the terminals are a little loose but its never gave me any starting probs. It cranks over very good, the drivers side batt. terminals are the ones loose but not loose enough to have corrosion around them.
You should really consider the super glow plug relay. I got mine from mouser, and I think most have. Mine still has the origional glow plugs, and at 6 years, and 190,xxx miles, the truck still starts in below 0 conditions. I aswell as most, get them from Mouser Electronics - Electronic Component Distributor The part number is 586-902. They are about $45 plus shipping. You will be awefully surprised in the difference. How old is your existing relay? I guess I should ask that before I tell you to just dive in and replace it.
I seen one yesterday for the first time and OMG those things are frickin huge lol. But he was still have cold start problems after that he was going to put some GPs in the truck to help his no start problem. He said he's been using his decel tune to start the truck and said it worked pretty well.

my truck done that for a while, had a heavy fuel smoke like an injector pump out of time
after warm up it was fine
don't know if I fixed it or problem went away
I changed CPS
not having an Air Intake HEater will cause this too. MIne blows smoke early int he morning when cold and only lasts for a few seconds. i dont think you have any major problems

Do you know the condition of his relay now? IE how old it is, oem or what it is? Even good glow plugs wont work that well with a sore relay. My thinking tells me if hes already replaced the glow plugs, the only thing left is the relay.
Thats an interesting find rbaker. Sounds like his issue also. Im glad I still have a black one in there.
Good point Mike. I'm almost done with a write up on the GPR and the GP's. I am trying to find an old GPR to dissamble to show what the contacts in side look like when they are shot. The pitting and arcing on the contacts will cause a poor connection and increased resistance, and voltage drop.
Sorry guys, maybe I didnt give enough info. The oil is Rotella synthetic 5-w 30( I think thats the weight,it comes in a blue jug),the GPR (from NAPA)was replaced at the same time the GP's and batts. were, I changed the CPS right about the same time also with the one from international.Maybe this add'l info will help.Like I said before after you turn the switch on the switch you can see the lights get brighter after about 90 seconds(give or take) so you can tell the GPR is working. Now what Im wondering is can the GPR show signs like its working(for example the lights getting brighter after the GPR cycle)but not be strong enough? Because it starts the same with the same amount of smoke regardless of how long I wait to start.

that was one of my thoughts but never checked to see if mine come on after start up
the rough idle on cold start may be the ICP sensor starting to go
