Does anybody have a picture or diagram of the correct way to route the plug wires on a 5.0. I have been strugleing to eliminate a detonation in either 7 or 8 or 2 and 4 for a while now and just can't seem to get it. I am finally going to break down and buy new wires but I want to route them right this time so that they last a little longer than 20,000. Pulled the plugs and they look good yet, haven't pulled the cap and rotor but I will replace them with the wires. Thanks.
I don't have a diagram on how to run the wires. But I remember my last bronco(it was a 95) It had a diagram in it on how to run the plug wires. I thought that it was 5 and 6 that would crossfire. I just put wire seperators in and spread the wires out and ran them neat, I never had a problem.
They must be separated at least 3inches from each other as they fire one after the other, this is a common problem with this engine.
Also if the wires are old and the insulation is either worn or hard they will cause cross firing, there is no substitute for good quality ignition components.
In other words if you change the wires go the steps further and replace the plugs and cap and rotor you will notice the difference.
Look for the two adjacent plugs that fire immediately after each other. Probably either 7-8 or 6-5 and separate those wires as much as practical. On my 351 it is 6-5.
