I've been looking to buy a expedition. I have found 2, One is a 1998 xlt with a 4.6 it has 131,000 miles on it. no dents outside clean on the inside with very little wear on seats and floor starts good runs good.
The other one is a 2000 xlt 4.6 with a 120,000 miles on it. outside good, inside good, starts good runs good. The 98 is a grand cheaper than the 2000. Any help with what year is better than the other interms of ride, maint, ect ect would be a great help.........................Tanks
you didnt mention if they were 4x2 or 4x4. what will you be using them for? if possible try to fin a 5.4 motor. I do a bit of four wheeling, so I found one with the bigger motor and drivetrain.
If you decide on the 2000 get under the truck on the passanger side with a flashlight. Look up where the head connects with the block and see if there is any leaking, oil is the main thing to look for. Some of these trucks from 1999 to around 2001 had a problem with machining od the passanger head. Be careful though because with that many miles on it it could be the valve covers leaking. One other thing to look at would be the blend doors if it has the automatic climate control. Make sure it goes from cool to heat with no problems. I love my truck but I and a lot of other people have run into these problems.
I am an owner of a 1998 with 5.4 and 4x4 16" tires and I work with a guy who has the 2000 with 5.4, 4x4. My gas mileage is much better than his. I seem to have far fewer problems than my coworker. This is my second 4x4 since 1979. The first was an IHC Scout with a 4 cyl 196. I have used both on beaches on Cape Cod and both have been exposed to winter road salt. Overall, the Expedition has been a great vehicle, except for some of the Ford nuances like brakelines that ruptured a few weeks ago and paint peeling with rust on the roof channels. Dealing with the dealer on warranty issues made me decide to buy used vehicles only from here on in. I do most of the repair work myself and with the help of this forum I have been able to solve most problems. According to my maintenance records, I have only spent about $4500 on this vehicle since new and that includes oil changes, tires and repairs. If I could purchase a 1998 XLT with 5.4, 16" tires and 3.31 axle ratio again, I would.
I forgot to comment on comfort. This is an extremely comfortable vehicle to drive. MY chidlren ( 18 and 22) and wife love driving the Expedition more than the Volvo S60, 850 or Taurus (no surprise there) that we also own and the price of gas is what keeps us from driving the Expedition more.
We had a 98 4x2 with the 4.6 for three years and traded it in for a 2000 4x4 with the 5.4 which we've had for eight years now. For dry weather on roads, I think the 4.6 and two wheel drive are best. Four wheel drive needs the 5.4 to make up for the extra weight, and the AWD is great for rainy weather and dirt roads. Both the 98 (for the time I had it) and the 2000, have been pretty much trouble free.
Just to add a few lines, I had a 98 Navigator that had 2WD on the selector with AWD and 4WD high and low. That's one of the things I miss on this 2000 Expy 4x4. The Navigator always felt like it was cruising smoother and using less gas when it was in 2WD mode on a dry highway.
