Help - Stalling - CPS, HPOP or Something else

99 F250 PSD SD 7.3 Manual Tran.

I usually find solutions to my problems on here pretty quick, but this has so many hits on a search, i cant seem to narrow down an exact Problem-Solution match.

Here are my (almost daily now) symptoms:
  • Starts fine, idles fine.
  • Seems to be a slight vibration in stick that i've gotten used, that i don't remember being there day 1.
  • Same thing with fuel pump (been replaced couple years back) seems to make a lot of noise compared to original.
  • Seems to run fine most of the time
  • During acceleration, it sometimes jolts like it wants to stall SEL comes on.
  • Several times it has just completely stalled, but restarts no problem (while still rolling and the small cars breathing down my tailgate)
  • The first time it ever stalled (few weeks ago) i was decelerating from 45mph, clutch still engaged, when i hit about 30mph
  • It has stalled several times just idleing waiting at light
  • Its seems to jolt more after a hard acceleration, not usualy during.
  • Today it was almost like i couldn't keep it running, pressing accelerator seemed to make it hesitate more
  • Pulled into driveway, left it running, opened hood to see if i could notice anything odd. nothing really.
  • While idleing, it hesitated several times about one minute apart, just guessing.
  • I only drive about ten minutes to work and back, and do not get over 50mph (since problem started, been babying it, until i get some $$$ to fix it)
This is what ive done since problem started:
  • Changed fuel filter, air filter, checked oil level (was about half quart low, topped off, close to oil change date)
  • New belt ... just because it needed it.
I want to find out what the problem is before i take it to mechanic. I have a feeing it is my CPS but have not noticed any awkward RPM readings, just drops to zero when it jolts. I would just replace the CPS myself but i have not done the CPS recall yet, ive always found it best to not fix what is not broken. I hope that this is the culprit though.

I have not checked the HPOP oil level just after a stall but will do this tomorrow, if it stalls. I have "POPSET" my CPS connector (just now) to see if this resolves problems in the morning.

Please help, any questions, suggestions, solutions or "Sounds Like"?

When i do go get my new CPS , do i get an option Black, Blue, Gray or do i just get what they give me. Ive read in this forum that the black one seems best.

It sounds like the CPS to me too. If the CEL comes on, that means there is a code stored in the computer. A scan will tell you for sure what the problem is.

As Ray stated, they will give you the gray CPS. If you want the black one, you'll have to buy it from International.

I second the CPS. With a "dirty" signal coming out of it, the ECU doesn't know how to make the engine run properly so it simply shuts it down.

Thumbs up

It was the CPS ... it had thrown its code and also one for the IDM was there ... probably because the CPS failed. It was a tense ride to work this morning, and thanks again for confirming this before i left out this morning ... i like to somewhat know what is wrong before i hand the keys to someone else.

I did get the gray one, cant tell much difference .... except its not stalling now.
