C6 to E4OD

I have a 1988 F-350 with a bad transmission ( a c6 ) and I have a 1990 F-250 with a good transmission ( an E4OD ).

I have heard that in order to convert this C6 to the E4OD I need a stand alone unit for it. I have looked at the prices and this unit is $500+!

Now for that price I think screw the overdrive, I can get a built C6 for that. (Craigslist)

I would however like to know if I could take this unit off of the truck and put it on my '88? If not, what happens if I don't have it and I just hook up the transmission? I am told it won't leave first gear, is this true? The engine in my 88 came from the 90 so the transmission will bolt up fine.

Any information you can give me on the subject of C6 to E4OD would be much appriciated.

Thanks

No, that isn't true. It will only work in one gear, but that gear is overdrive, not first gear. It will go to first if you move the shifter to 1, and it will go to 2 if you move the shifter to 2, but it will go to fourth (overdrive) anytime the shifter is in D. And the torque converter will never lock.

I'm just thinking out loud here, but couldn't you swap out the harness out of the 1990 into the 1988. I'm pretty sure the 1988 sterling rear has the plug for the ring gear sensor and changing out the computer and associarted wiring should allow the E4OD to work properly?

I have no idea what plug you are referring to. As for swapping out the associated wiring, i'm not really sure WHAT wiring has to come off the truck as for this computer, is there a specific one for the transmission I can pull off?

'88 EFI is pretty simple. I'm using the wiring harness from my '88 because the '90s was messed up. As for a computer, I have no idea. The closest thing to that I assume is the Electronic control module thing. I'm not sure if there's something else.

I swapped the engine myself, and it runs great. Drove great for like two days until the transmission went out.

So i'm pretty clueless about this computer stuff? Anymore information is great!

The E4OD is computer controlled. The original computer needs inputs from all kinds of sensors, including a speed sensor, hence the mention of the plugged hole in the rear axle where one can be fitted. In youe case the easist thing is to throw out the $500 on a stand alone controller. Now, if it was me, I would fix ( or get reman) the C6. A good, strong mechanical transmission with no electronics. The choice is yours.
