I don't think he meant "cooler" as in degrees. But that was also my first thought.

Yep with stock gears you can hit some pretty high EGTs, especially since you often lug the motor out of the powerband.

I'm guessing your mileage would actually go UP if you re-geared, since you're causing it to lug on pretty much every takeoff like Dan said.....4:56 would get you alot closer, yet still give you decent mileage with the 40's

I run 4.56s with 38s and ran 40s for maybe 5 months. Nice combo.

Depending on the driving you do, you can actually get some good mpg with 3.73s and large tires. I do a lot of cruising at 45-60mph, so I was pushing some low, low rpms in OD getting some decent mpg.

Yeah mine will pull itself around with the stock gearing just fine there are times when i would like a little lower gearing you know so im able to pull OD when im pulling somthing a little heavier with out killing my engine. But on the whole EGT thing my edge combo would hit way high egt's on flat ground moving just the truck. But with the dp and i can barley hit 1200 and it takes awhile. Now when I was in the 140 horse setting pulling a trailer going up that hill actually pulling away from my buddies 6.0 which has a stock engine and is at stock highth and it took longer than I expected to hit those temps. With the edge i wouldve been there intstantly. It wasnt the smart thing to do ill give ya that i know I was in the wrong.
