I just returned from a trip to North Alabama and had a blast driving roads that were barely two lanes with no lines. Also, got to take the rig on some old forest service dirt roads. Remember that I am unloaded for the entire trip besides myself, my wife, my buddy, two dogs and necessary emergency type items in the bed.
Anyhow, from what I understand under hard acceleration/long hills I should see some black smoke (NOTE: I am not trying to get black smoke I just want to ensure that my engine is properly running!). I had quite a few long grades where I was barely going 35 mph and pegging out the EGT's at 1100-1150. While in those conditions I would have small amounts of whitish/gray smoke.
My understanding is that my timing might be retarded? What do you guys think? Note: I hit 1350 on the EGT's once while avoiding a interesting situation.........
I've found on mine that if the timing is right, the engine has the "powerstroke rattle" until it gets to 130 degrees, then it quiets down. If it rattles all the time, it is too far advanced and will heat up fast and blow smoke. If it is too far retarded, it probably won't rattle when cold.
In addition to the timing, the injector pump screw can be adjusted for more or less fuel (smoke). Changing the screw can change the timing.
Do a search on timing and injector pump (ip) screw and you will find more info.
Empty, my truck will pull 60 mph up 6% grades with minimal smoke. At 10,000 ft elevation, it smokes alot and the speed drops. If the temps go up, downshift and keep the revs up. I've got it adjusted so that in the day, I don't see much smoke, but at night it is visible behind me in the car headlights.
If you are only doing 35mph uphill empty, it is either a really steep grade, you are in too high a gear or your engine needs some adjustment/work
Depends on where he was there are a lot of hills that makes 6% look like an overpass with 10 mph switchbacks on them making 35 not unreasonable at all.
I would liketo know what kind of situation caused the 1350 egt's at those speeds you should be able to drop a gear keep rpm's up to lower the egt's.
would timing to far advanced make the engine surge like there is air in the lines long story short i got a bad batch of diesel during hurricane ike and while on the trip i advanced my timing i had a big rig mechanic help me but we did it by ear ever since then and only sometimes i get this surge to my engine like its got air in the lines and idk if it was that bad batch of diesel or its my timing to far advanced because both happened at about the same time. the reason i think it might still be the diesel is my pickup tubes are bad below half tank so i may have never ran all of the diesel out
appreciate the reply but it was a combination of the bad diesel and somehow i managed to throw a rock or something into my fuel line between the selector and electric fuel pump and it was barely sucking air through a little crack replaced the line and no more probs. I changed the timing because of some funky smoke, i'm bout to install a turbo, and the engine was also high egts with hard starts. i only advanced it enough for me to see anyone else can't even tell that the pump is cocked and it runs great and starts wonderful first rollover and boom it is runnin.
