I have a 02 F350 dually dump 6.8 V10 has developed a tick under load more noticeable at low rpm during driving. The tick doesn't get louder or increase with rpm. When I parked it tonight I pop the hood and got up in the compartment and can't hear anything besides the typical injector light tick. All the exhast studs are there. Whole exhaust is solid. I got under it and sounded like it was coming from the tranny pan. Seems to be shifting fine. Any idea's, Thanks
Does it sound like a light tick - sort of the sound you get when you click a ballpoint pen? If so, it could just be the injectors. They do that sometimes.
When's the last time you checked the torque on the plugs?
If it's a manual tranny, it could be the clutch. If it's a manual - Does it go away if you depress the clutch pedal?
Kind of throws me that it doesn't change with engine rpms.
Auto tranny. Sounds louder then injector tick. Have not checked plugs recently. Feelin a little skip sitting at lights, I ordered some COP's I expect I have one on it's way out. the truck has 41K on it with original plugs. I was gonna change the plugs when i do the COP's but don't want to open a can of worms with blowing plugs out as a result of changing them. Thanks for the info so far.
If you change the plugs, follow the specs (14 ft/lb torque) when tightening them and use a light coat of anti-seize, you will have a far less chance of blowing a plug than if you just let it go.
It would more than likely need COPs if it stuttered under load than sitting at a light.
Back to the OP - Can you locate the origin of the "tick"? You can use a length of hose, about 18" long, and, while the engine is running, carefully put one end of the hose into the engine compartment and the other to your ear - like a doctor's stethoscope - and see if you can locate it.
BTW - 41K on an '02 model - you got plenty of good miles left on that baby!
I've done the hose thing before but not on this truck. I will be messing with it this weekend and will try to pinpoint the area. Seems the tick is most noticeable starting from a stop. You really have to pay attention going 40 plus mph to hear it. When I got under the truck eariler this week I heard the tick from the tranny pan the best. Not sure if it was just sounds bouncing off whatever but thats where it was the loudest at idle in my driveway. Can't imagine anything in there causing that tick last tranny pan I had open only revealed the filter, pick up and fluid vanes.
41K Hoping to get 10 years out of it without a major problem. Truck sits half the week. 4.00 a gallon and 9 miles to the gallon was tough. Luckily we are down to 2.50 for gas here now.
