I purchased the male plug for the wiring harness for my overhead DVD family entertainment syetem but when my original dvd player was stolen whoever ripped it off cut my wires a little bit short of what will properly reach to the dvd player to make the connection. What I am wondering is if I were to basically just go wire by wire and solder 3-4" extensions on and then attach those to the male coupler I bought to plug into the replacement DVD would that work? I dont see why not but I dont know if there are any RCA style cords in the bundle that comes from the radio? If there aren't any rca's and it's just wiring I would think it should function just fine with a good soldering job. I considered just simple pinch connectors but there are quite a few wires in that bundle coming from the radio and dont want to potentially make everything to bulky to tuck neatly inside the overhead console.
Shielded wires are a pain to extend, but the rest are a piece of cake. You will be able to tell the shielded wires, they will be a wire inside a wire. Imagine a wire wrapped with insulation with a weave of wire around that and a final coat of insulation. They can be extended, but you might find it easier and cleaner to run a new wire.
Just solder them up, it can be done where there is no extra bulk and looks good.
ok so here is one more potential complication. In the bundle there are basically two groups of wires. One has foil around it and then in electrical taped and one is just convered in electrical tape. The bundle without the aluminum shielding that is coming from radio matches up perfect with the wires on the male end that I am connecting but the bundle that gets foil that is coming from the radio has a purple, green/red, gray, and orange/black. The harness I has two of each of those colors. I am thinking that I will solder up the wires that match up and then just twist together the other group and try it until it function right and then solder all of that. Anybody else have any suggestions?
