Hi does anyone have experience using pull a part? I have one nearby in Jackson and thought I might give it a try for a few things on my long list of parts: engine, trans, rearend, seat, etc. I saw that it says no jacks or torches on the website. Does that mean they dont supply these or you cant bring your own? Thanks for any input on this.
i have gotten a lot of parts from the local pick & pull here. and they are a lot cheaper than any other wreckers around and usually have a good selection of vehicles to choose from. not too much for older vehicles, mostly mid 80's up to around 2000 is the newest they have. but every once and awhile an older vehicle passes through.
and yes you cannot bring a cutting torch, gas generator or gas powered tools and jacks onto the site. all of the vehicles at the local yard are up on stands anyways, so you can get underneath them pretty easily. and they are constantly bringing in new vehicles every week so they don't always have the same vehicles week after week after week (which also means the vehicle you were looking at this week might be crushed next week when you go back for parts, but they usually keep vehicles in the yard for a couple of weeks before crushing).
Thanks for the info. But what about an engine how would you get it loaded with no jack or crane? Right now im thinking about going and getting some IFS parts for my truck but an engine, trans, and rear in the works very soon.
The ones here in San Diego have some cobbled up offroad cherry pickers that they lend or rent. They also have large garden carts. I always bring a hand truck with a milk crate and extra bungees along with my tools. They have 50% sales on a regular basis. You can get some killer deals but you usually stand in line at checkout for an hour or more.
Your pull a part in Jackson is like the one here in Birmingham. It will cost you a dollar to just walk in to the yard. They have wheelbarrows for you to use and all the vehicles are up on old tire rims or stands. I got a complete rearend from an 94 explorer for $65.00. They have a couple of hoist on wheels to remove engines and a couple of small trailers pulled behind golf carts or 4 wheelers to help haul your big stuff down to checkout. Oh yeah, any tool boxes you carry in is inspected as you go in. I guess to see if you are sneaking in a propane torch or something..... They also have computers at the counter you can use to find what row the vehicle you are looking for is on. Happy hunting.
What always amazes me is the jerks who open up an engine to get a set of used lifters for $10, or a used timing chain for $5, scatter all the parts they remove around the area, then leave the hood open so dirt and rain get into the rest of the engine. How desparate do you have to be to buy a used timing chain for a 350 Chev??
I frequent the "U-wrench" type yards as often as I can. When I use to live down in the Columbus OH area (for grad school) there was a huge yard not too far away, They usually had a turn over 50+ cars/trucks per day and vehical were often not in the lot more than 2 to 3 weeks before stripped and crushed. I actually got in the habit of going twice a week or so to see what new stuff they had in. If you do have a part in mind though, be prepared with the tools and time to pull the part, if not it may not be there (or may be in pieces) the next time you go out in the yard.
Needless to say I ended up with a few really awesome deals and saved a bunch of cash too, you just need to know what your looking for and how to remove it
