Hi all. Start off, I have a 2000 4x4 F150 Supercab with 75000 miles. I started to hear a clicking/knocking noise when I turn, or move the steering wheel back in forth. I only hear it when I'm driving, not when the truck is parked. Also, there sounds like something in the bed banging around when I go over any kind of bump, there's nothing in the bed. I've taken a look under the truck for anything loose, and couldn't find anything. Anyone have any ideas on either problem? Thanks.
The same thing happened to me. I thought it was my cv's also. But one night I was pulling my friend out and after, when driving home my truck started shaking really bad. We looked under and it was the tie rod. After we replaced that there is no clicking or knocking. Also my truck doesnt shake that bad anymore, not much you can do with 38's as far as ride quality. You can check if it is the tie rod by having a buddy steer side to side while you hold on to the tie rod, if it moves then it is bad.
Thanks for the info. I called a shop today to get an estimate for them to look at it, and they said Ford didn't put cv joints on their 4x4 trucks. They said it was probably the ball joints. Does this sound right to anyone?
i was thinking ball joints also. thats another good guess. the truck does have CV joints. how do they think the 4 x 4 axles move when you turn a corner? maybe they call them something else? in general the ball joints are the biggest wear problem, then the tie rods, and finally the CV joints. they rarely fail.
