NEW MEMBER Introduction Thread (NO TECH QUESTIONS)
Glad to have found this forum
While searching for answers to a clutch problem on a project I'm building, I ran across this forum and there were my answers. I'm impressed by the knowledge on here and the willingness of the members to help each other. About me, I'm an old guy, always had Ford trucks and cars. I currently have a 95 F150 for general use and a 2008 F450 with a utility body. I have a 3500# crane and my welding machines mounted on the F450. Current projects are an OT '27 T roadster and an OT '46 Mercury 4 door.
Where to start?
Hi, my name is Patrick and my first ever car was a 1992 f150 5.0 XLT. Not even a full two years after I got the truck from my grandad the engines head gasket blew. At the time I was in a two-year vo-tech class at my high school, so I attempted to get the heads machined and put them back on. I'm sure I made every mistake you could think of. Long story short I could not get it cranked, then I was told I would be better off getting a new engine. I ordered the engine put it in and still could not get it running. I gave up.... But now I hoping to revisit it with a better understanding and I was wondering where would be a good place to start. Thanks.
Greetings from TN,
New member background.
Restoring my 1977 F150 short bed, 4x4, C6, P/S, P/B. Ground up "freshen up" all for good looking reliable daily work/driver. Only major upgrade is converting 351M to 400. TMI pistons and mild performance engine build.
Anyway, I may have a few questions coming, and, I have sourced lots of part and tech info I can share with y'all too.

1974 Shortbed F100 4x4 - start of my journey
Hello Everyone!! I have owned my '69 Bronco since 1983.. but it has been ummmm,,"stored" on the side of my house for 20 years now (yikes!!) It was running when I parked it but I couldn't afford tires. And now?... well, it's on my "list"...
In the meantime, I have been keeping my eyes peeled for a shortbed, 4x4 or otherwise. I know, the money could be used for my Bronco but for a few reasons, it just isn't the right time. Anyway, I have been watching (mostly the local Craigslist) and the other day I got lucky and scored this 1974 Ranger XLT Shortbed 4x4 for a great price. But wait! There is NO MOTOR and where the transmission should be, there is what I am told is a C6 (with Transfer case) basically strapped in place. Not connected. Strapped in place!
The seller was told by the previous owner that it had been running (back in the eighties) as a 390 with auto. That the motor was pulled and then something happened with the machine shop.yadda yadda...but what it looks like to me is that this truck was in the process of some conversion that didn't go very far. Truth is that the manual steering column and the original pedals are still there and among the parts in the cab and the bed was what looks like an NP435 shifter ( I recognize that because I put one in my Bronco). Also in the parts pile is a steering column for an automatic and a bunch of brackets which I haven't identified. And,.... the seller is giving me an NP435 he pulled from a '78 Bronco. He's not sure if it has the transfer case still attached but I hope so.
According to the tag, this truck was born with a 360 and an NP435 and 3.50 axles Raven Black Styleside. The presence of a condenser in the pile suggests it was factory A/C. There is surface rust everywhere underneath but zero cancer and the body is in pretty good shape. looks like all the trim is there in great shape as well. It has a pretty tall lift that I am not a fan of but the budget is going to determine how far I go.
So here I am, having to decide what to do. I can find a 360 and put it back as built. Probably the least amount of work. Or I can try to go Automatic (would be a nicer driver) but I have no clue the status of the C6 and TCase. Or.... I can try for a later model drive-train in hopes of better MPG.
Is this truck rare? Best I can tell, they only made about 26,888 in 74 and about 37,297 in 75...and that's it.. That would affect my decision about the drive train and keeping it original.
OK. That is it for my introduction. I guess my next step is to start a mechanical thread and some pics.
