I hate to hijack this thread, but can someone explain to me what exactly the oil bath air cleaner did? I've seen them on various 40's and 50's Fords, but I never really understood the purpose behind it.
They were a servicable,reusable and cheap form of air filtration.
As air is drawn through an oilbath the oil coated steel mesh captured particles. I had one on a 1968 Ford 5000 Tractor with 1000's of hours on it.
I had a 65 F-100 with a 352 that my dad bought new. It had the oilbath breather.
They filter air the same the same way as nose hairs with snot on them.
LOL...funny but true. Depending on how often they were serviced, one could scrape a considerable amount of dirt from the bottom of the housing where it settled. After cleaning the element and housing with gas, diesel, or kerosene we usually used crankcase drain oil to refill the housing to the full mark. Recycling is not a new idea.
