Water Pump Studs

Hey everyone,

I was changing the water pump in my F250 yesterday and ran into some problems..... mainly rusty bolts

So to make a long story short, I ended up snapping two of the three long threaded studs, one is still in there about 1.5" in (God knows how I'm going to get it out) But I obviously need to buy a new set now, and all I could find is a kit from Rock Auto Parts (rockauto.com) and the picture didn't look exactly the same as the ones I pulled out so far. I assume the dealer sells them since it seems like a common thing, but if anyone can confirm that it could save me trying to bum a ride for a trip to the dealer tomorrow.

But the stud that is stuck in there is a little over an inch in, and I don't think my easy out is going to get it out, am I going to need to pull the timing cover to get it or am I doomed?

Thanks-
Chris

Sorry reeds I don't see it being possable to get the broken peice out without removing the timming cover. It sounds like if you remove the cover you will have some of the broken peice sticking out that you can grab. If you try to drill it first without removing the cover there is a good chance you will ruin your opertunity to grab the peice without drilling. It's much easier to use vice grips then "easy outs".

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, only all the bolts are rusty so Im worried about snapping more of them when I remove the timing cover.

Yah, problems like your are very good at "snowballing" out of control. If your not carefull you'll end up having to take the oil pan off witch is a nightmare to avoid.

I don't know were to get the studs you need, I would probably be looking at ARP they make good stuff, but I don't know if they make what you need. Now that I think about it they probably do.

Are you good at taking out broken bolts I've done it alot and have some good advice if needed.

Good Luck

I got a picture of the catalog page that has what you need from ARP but can't figure out how to post it. Go to ARP | Catalog then hit "front cover bolts and studs" in left column.

I was in a similiar situation a few months ago. Luckily none of my studs broke. But, when I had them out: I could tell that they were about to break if I tried to put them back in. Had no luck from the stealership. Tried a couple of them. No luck at multiple auto part stores. I ended up getting studs, and making one of them from home depot. But about a week later I was in auto parts store, and saw a kit in the "Help" section. I kid you not, they have the exact match for each stud in the kit. I wanna say it was "Pep boys," or "Autozone." I remember the kit was dirt cheap. The Home Depot bolts are holding up just fine.

Here is a hint for anyone getting into this with any indication that the water pump bolts/ studs are rusty, heat up whatever part you can see and the humps in the water pump the studs are in, then let them cool and repeat the process 4 or 5 times, then soak it in P'Blaster (or PB Blaster), let it dry, wipe it off and heat it one more time, then try to take it off, this worked for all the ones that had already broken and may save you a headache and a heck of a lot more work. I found a MAPP gas hand held torch was fine heat wise.

All but one stud is out now, and I ordered new ones from the stealership, so when that comes in and I finish I'll post how it went, or I'll be back when I hit another roadblock...
