I need to start this by saying I love my truck! I tow a 13K 5th wheel and the truck is a beast!. Here is my one complaint. The Accessory package that came with my truck also includes a factory touch screen GPS. This was a high dollar option I would not have paid for separately but was in the truck. I got such a good deal on the truck it did not bother me. The salesman taunted this as the greatest thing since sliced bread. This is the biggest piece of trash I have ever seen. When I could not find a Wall mart, Kmart, Sears, any camp ground, Lowe's or Home Depot, I took it back and asked WTF. I was told it was "Fine" and "did not even need an update". I have a 199.00 Garmin that runs circles around this at 1/10th the cost.
Now Ford called with a repair survey. I answered with 0s on a scale of 1 -10. for this service. Now the dealership is ringing my phone off the hook to get me back into "get this fixed" Any one else had a problem with or like this?
I know with mine, I had to go into my options and turn on the function to show me where restaurants, stores and gas stations were, before that nothing was marked on it but now it shows everything. Mine is aftermarket but maybe the same for yours?
Well it depends on the area it was intended for and the amount of memory it was designed with. Saying that, Ford did not make this unit. I would suspect there are only a handfull of actual GPS manufactures, probably Magellan, Garmin, Raython, and a couple others. If to save money ford wanted less memory, which means cutting out some data. You can probably find out who manufactured the GPS module and find locales for it. More data for your area/state/region, but sacrificing some roads or data in other areas/states/regions.
Since they use the same software, I'd suspect that Garmin makes their GPS. Now you just need to figure out how they update it and contact Garmin for updates.
I doubt Pioneer makes the GPS hardware/firmware. It is most likely built by garmin and integrated into the head unit by pioneer. It's not uncommon for specialized companies to sell an integrateable part and collect a nice check for it.
I don't think Garmin does automotive OEM systems but I could be wrong. I've heard of Denso, Mitsubishi Electronics (which does units for some of Ford's luxury lines like Volvo), etc.. In the case of Volvo they seem to be moving from their expensive motorized GPS system to aftermarket Garmin Nuvis (the car manufacturer simply designs a special cradle for integration to the car's electronics and now has an option for a fraction of the cost of their previous system.)
As of a year ago when I last checked virtually ALL domestic OEM units used Navteq software and you have to go to their website to check on coverage for a specific area or order and pay for the latest slice of data.
The GPS has a Pioneer label on the OEM sticker. It doesn't matter the actual GPS unit, it's the software to run the unit. For the cost you could buy an aftermarket unit and be happy.
