They run to the radio (assuming yours is similar type) - used them directly from the back of factory radio to my AVIC system (plus a inbetween assembly that was required).
The steering wheel controls are on the 20 pin plug on the back of your head unit. The aftermarket will not have a place for this plug and will will need to buy an interface adapter for the aftermarket in order to make the steering wheel controls work. Both PAC and PIE make these interfaces. No one that I have seen on these forums has figured out how to make it work without this interface.
