Great thread! I have learned alot about HDTV's. Too Bad, I make good money, my wife works too, and we both feel these TV's are still way overpriced!
Talk about credit crises in America!!
I have been waiting waiting waiting, I've been looking at these for a long time. I may wait until next year (2010) the prices aren't right yet. I will also bet those that can afford them, will buy alot of TV's between now and February 2009, the ending date of analog transmission., This may help spawn some price wars.
I had the same issue...too cheap to pull the trigger...took me about three years...glad I finally did it!!! Buying a TV is like buying a computer...what is on the shelf is already obsolete...they are just waiting to get rid of old inventory before bringing out the latest and greatest.
I thought I saw on Yahoo where the price of TV were to fall next year. The LCD use less power than a plasma, but don't follow fast movement as good as a plasma. I would check first on who does the warranty work on the TV though. I bought a LG from Ultimate and had the power supply go out on it. Found out that one of the licensed repair shops wouldn't touch it because I didn't buy it from them. That left me with one place to take it to. Then LG didn't have a replacement part for it and wouldn't for a few weeks. Ended up finally getting a new one, but to tell the truth my boys Samsung has a better picture on it. I wouldn't rec the LG myself.
Both techs are nearly equal now, what I'm hearing is just personal preference. I could easily say my Sharp Aquos with the 120hz processor could blow away most plasma TV's with the exception of the Pioneer Elite....what I would suggest is let your own eyes do the shopping and compare brands in both techs. Also, placement is a factor especially in well lit rooms because of the glare problems that are inherent with plasma's......but, put that plasma in the basement and you will see an entirely different animal. The better contrast levels and blacks really shine in a darker room. I'm happy with the performance of my LCD but I wish it had all the bells a whistles of both styles....I love my bro-inlaws plasma and he loves mine for what each TV can bring to the table.
What about DLP? We bought a 56" Sammy in February after spending 4 hours over 3 days in the showroom comparing DLP, LCD and Plasma. At $2196 out the door including delivery and set-up, I feel DLP gives you the most bang for your $$$. It's hooked up to DirecTV's HD package and has a gorgeous picture - JMHO. This Sammy uses LED's so no bulb to replace and no "rainbow" effect.
We also bought Monster's Set-Up DVD to help tweak our new set.
Of course, if you're gonna hang it then you need LCD or Plasma.
We've been buying our sets at Sams Club from the returned rack. 1 Samsung 26" LCD, 4 Philips 32" LCDs, 1 Philips 42" plasma, 1 Philips 52" plasma, 1 Westinghouse 52" plasma monitor. All sets were at terrifically discounted prices. The most I paid was for the 52" Philips plasma $962. The best time to find discounts in the return rack is in the weeks following the Superbowl. All the sets double as computer monitors. Programming is from Directv HD.
