I have a vibration in the drive line in my pickup, it seems to be more pronounced when pulling a trailer. I jacked rear wheels off the ground, checked all universals and they seem tight, there was a little play in the center bearing it moved from side to side it seem to be the more the rubber bushing around the bearing rather than the bearing itself. also when i spun the rear wheels to see if there was any play in the differential the wheel spun kind of hard and both wheels turned in the same direction, not sure if these mean anything, any thoughts on this would be appreciated!! ps if it matters this is a 2 wheel drive truck.
pull the driveshaft out and check for binding or rusted joints. sometimes a joint will feel tight when you do the shake test, but when you pull the shaft and try to move it you'll find it rusted and not moving. this can cause some wierd vibrations. happy hunting, Barney
also if its a two piece driveshaft it might need to be greased. if its a two piece there will be a rubber boot almost in the middle of the driveshaft, you take off that boot-seperate the two and grease the spline side. good luck.
My truck has a vibration that feels like its in the drivetrain in first or second gear when it hits about 1900 rpm. It vibrates worse the more pedal I give it. And it clears right up at about 2000 rpm. I haven't had a chance to look at it much though. My truck does have a 6" lift and two piece driveshaft. I have seen that the carrier bearing does have several shims under it. I'll let you know if I find out whats wrong with mine and I'm anxious to see if your problem is coming from the same culprit.
I took my driveshaft apart and checked it out.
Put it back together greased ...........nothing changed.
My vibration goes away the harder I step on it.
My 99.5 had the same thing and it is a two piece driveline. I had to get the large CV joint that comes from the transmission output to the driveline replaced by a driveline shop. That cured it but cost about 280 clams because they had to replace the whole joint and not just the bad u-joint.
I really had to pry the whole thing with a large bar to see the movement. It is a weird set up with a u-joint and a ball joint connecting to the next u-joint. That may be the culprit.
Hope it helps.
