I need some help! My son has inherited a 1977 F150 2 wheel drive from his grandpa. The steering column needed replaced so we found a good used one, put it in and the turn signal indicators light up when he turns the head lights on. Everything seems to work just fine except for the indicators lighting up. The column we put in came out of a 77 and all the wiring matched up. We put the old one back in and the indicators didn't light up unless the turn signals were turned on. Tried another column and the same thing the indicaters light up with the head lights on. The indicators even get brighter with the high beams on. Any ideas??
Sounds like a bad ground. It's trying to ground through your indicator lights. If I remember correctly the main ground is directly behind the instrument cluster. The prints call it a y brace. I would start there and work you way to the steering column.
This might be dumb question but even though the steering column wiring connector properly mated with the truck's under dash harness, did you make sure that all of the colors matched on both connectors?
Hi, if the column was out of newer truck like 79 there might be diffrent wiring. I used a headlight switch out of a newer truck and the same thing happend. Plug ins are the same but wired diffrent inside. The wires can be removed from the plug so you can change the column hasness back to the old one and should be good to go.

The truck is '77 and the column we are trying to put in is also a '77.
