Hi I could use some help here
I got a 77 F250 I'm gonna start restoring, it has a 351M that WAS stuck. I got it freed up just recently.
I came across a 4.6L that will be coming out of a 96 ford crown vic {ex police cruiser}. The engine has approx 100k miles,
Should I put the money into the 351M or should I go with the 4.6L? My knowledge on what will fit, and what would be more economical to repair is my shortfall I heard the 4.6 can be built up pretty nicely
Would the 4.6 fit without really modifiying mounts? How hard would it be to get a bell housing that will match up the 4 speed I have in the truck? What about hooking up the new fuel injection system vs. carb, and electronics?
I could really use some help here
Can Do
I'll try to send in photos as the tear down begins

From my experience as a Police Officer, you don't want an ex-police motor. Here's why: The engines run ALOT and it's usually 1 of 2 ways. It's either idle, or full throttle. And I can tell you that the factory 4.6L motors have a hard time moving a vehicle as heavy as your truck. Crown Vic's aren't small, plus the weight of the electronics, cage, etc. You can find used 460's everywhere if you really want to swap motors. And it sounds like you would be refreshing the 4.6L anyway. Why not swap to a bigger motor?
With embarrasment................ I must admit this will be the first ford v8 I will have in a truck. My father baptised me in a 74 f100 with a 240. I beefed up the chassis to a 3/4 ton and inherited my fathers 300/6.
It was sh** luck I came across this deal with the 96 crown vic. Please tell me more about getting the most bang out of my buck on the 351m

Use the search function at the top of the page. 351m to 400. You'll find lots of info.
These are the basics, and basically doubles stock HP/TQ ratings. Not too bad for just south of $2000. Then another $200 in shipping, and if you have a shop do the build, add another $1500.
I'm not sure what kind of mess I will get into with this 351m. When my brother parked the truck, nothing was prepped for winter or storage, at the time he was experiencing difficulties with the holly 4bbl carb. It must have been sitting for 10 years. When I got it there was no coolant in the radiator, I am worried about internal damage
The engine was stuck, but I got it moving again.
This evening my brother said that when he bought the engine from the junk yard, they told him it was 351 with the beefed up parts to make it a 400. What should I look for to make the determination if I have a 400?
