Power steering pulley retainer ?

G-day
Does the allen headed bolt that helps hold the power steering pulley on have a right or left handed thread ? (1990 351w)

Yeah, that hex in the end of the shaft is misleading when it comes to the pulley. It may be used in pump assembly, but the pulley itself is pressed on to the shaft. You will need a power steering pulley puller and install tool to remove and reinstall the pulley. Do not use a traditional puller because you can damage the pump internals.

This is a special puller that is sort of a "clamshell" in design. It is two halves that fit together ofer the end of the retainer and one lip fits inside the groove that goes around the retainer. Then a metal sleeve slides on over it to hold the puller together . You crank down on the bolt and it pulls the retainer off of the shaft. The hole inside the hex hole is tapped and a bolt helps you pull the retainer back on. You won't do it with anything else.

Thanks guys, I have ordered one of those "clam shell" pullers from NPD, I suspected that the hex hole wasn't a allen headed fastener but now I know for sure. I saw the installer in the catalogue but was wondering what does it screw into to be able to push the pulley on ?

Just a bolt and washer. They go through the middle of the retainer... you screw the bolt into the hex hole and thread it on.... then just tighten to pull the retainer on.
