My father owns a 2000 F350 that dropped a valve and now, due to limited funds, he's in the process of doing the rebuild himself. All the machine work is finished and he has the rotating assembly together.
Now he's trying to figure out if he has the camshaft and crankshaft timed right. What he really needs, and would buy if he could find it, is an assembly manual. However, rebuilding a 7.3 must be a trade secret because I can't find one anywhere.

Wow, I'm impressed. Please keep us informed and where are you located. I did not look at your profile so if it's there I apologize. You sure have come to the correct place for help. Welcome to FTE.
F350-6 that’s perfect. It’s exactly what I was looking for. I will advise him to join up. He’s been a little slow to take up computing and internet surfing but he’s coming around. This will be good for him.

You know I'm such a dunce at these 7.3's that I do not even know if the cam is gear driven or chain. But the crank gear will most likely have a dot at 12 O'clock TDC. The cam gear should have one at 6 O'clock BDC of the gear. Now if there are advance or retard keyways I'm clueless and my advice comes from age old racing engine building days. The site is really dead today and there are plenty of members that know just what you want to know. But Chris's link should answer all of your questions for you and I am just wasting your time.

Mark, there's a reason you've never read about a broken timing chain here.
Kris posted that pic a while back and I saved it. This motor is not at TDC, but if you really want to be confused about how engines work now a days, see the square indentions in the cam gear? Notice the larger square at the bottom, and the tiny square 180 deg opposite? That's what our lovely CPS reads to determine engine timing (no wonder we have issues). The larger square is under the CPS at TDC (or really close)
Yeah I kinda figured on the gear drive. But on a gasoline engine the gear whine is real noticeable, but the gear is much more efficient. I don't see a timing mark on the crank gear though, but if Pop has gotten as far as he has already without our help he is probably all set now. I just want to hear the results.
