My name is Joe and I am new to the FTE forum. My truck is a late 1999 F350 crew cab 4x4 longbed with a 7.3L that is completely bone stock except for the 8" lift, 36" Super Swampers and the sound system. I must tell you guys that I am here because I just am not that knowledgable when it comes to mechanics and do not know what I should to when it comes to doing some light modifications to increase my hp and torque. I have been told by several shops here in California that I should replace the intake, exhaust and install some sort of programmer. First, the intake, I want some thing that I will gain from and it will work and not just look good. Second, the exhaust, even though I am in Los Angeles, I am still a good ol boy from the Mid-West and love the look of stacks. I just don't know what size I should get 4", 5", 6" or 7" chrome or stainless. In this case it must look great and perform well. Last, the programmer, this is where I am really lost. I know that there are a lot to choose from like Superchips, The Edge, Bully Dog, Hyper Tech and now I have learned from reading here the DP Tuner. I really want to blow the black smoke, chirp them rear wheels (just now and then) and to be able to pull the boat, toy hauler or car trailer up a grade with no problems at all and not in the slow lane. CAN YOU GUYS PLEASE DIRECT ME TO THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT? Thank you very much, Joe
well your on the right track...alot of us run an air filter called 6637 avaiable from napa...that we adapte to our stock system...exhaust personal preference anything to let her flow, you will want some gauges EGT most important maybe boost, tranny temp, then you will be ready for the permagrime you will be able to achive with the adition of the DP tuner...I'd get the new f6.....my .02
mods are pretty easy, most of them any way,
from what i have read and done with my truck is
1st exhaust, then intake, then gauges, then chip. (DP TUNER)
stacks are very cool looking , i pull a 5er so i cant have them.
if you can afford it go Stainless,

Thank you very much for your input. As to the 6637 does that go into the stock airbox?

Erik, Thank you for you assistance and input. It seems like Jody has made a name for himself with the DP Tuner. It looks like your have a few mods yourself, do you have any idea of what the cost maybe? I was quoted $1500 - $1700 in California for the intake, stacks and programmer, but of course they didn't say anything about the gauges. I have found serveral different types of stacks on ebay and at a reasonable price. Any other idea of where I should shop?
Joe,
well i am in Alaska, i have to pay extra shipping on anything i buy, but if i am allowed to say on here my 6637 filter at napa was like $45 , exhaust was around $600 with shipping, wicked wheel was like $70 , Valve body was $300 , pod and gauges was about $300. Tuner was around $600 (and worth every penny)
rotors and pads were just up-grades not really mods,
all the sponcers at the top of your web page are all good company's to buy from, just call around and check out web sites for price differences.
No matter which way you look at it, what I was quoted or what you say Erik it is roughly the same amount of money. Which is all good, now I just need to figure out where to buy from. Thanks again!
I just remember something, dont over power your truck with many Horse Power mods.
Im not a diesel engine engineer but i have learned from lots of reading. and there is a point at which you will have to start buying the really expensive mods like duel high pressure oil pumps, larger fuel pump, bigger injectors, stud kit for your heads. Others may chime in on this also, but i am at a point on my truck that i can produce too much boost, so much that my truck will de-fuel the engine, which happens about 25+ psi, and at 120 extra HP on a DP tuner chip happens very fast. I have blown my inter cooler lines off, a couple times, there is a mod to cure that, and a boost fooler to keep you from de-fueling, but with that you can blow your heads off your block, which there is a mod for that, (head stud kit) $$$$. and then your injectors are just not big enough, then you dont push enough fuel to them, then you dont have enough oil going into them to pressre them up.
its called PMS , PowerStorke MOD Syndrome , be very aware of this, it can and will break the bank

Where ever possible cut out the middle man. Such as the D-P, deal directly with Jody or Diane. The 6637 takes about an hour and is worth every penny. You can get 2 at Fleetfilter for just about the price of 1 at NAPA. I usually buy NAPA or Carquest because I wait until the last minute. Duh.....Have fun. Me, I would not bother with the stacks, but that's just my opinion. Whatever you do with the exhaust do it from the turbo back and do not bother with a muffler. You'll love it.
