Fuel Leaking

Ok after all my posts about my truck stalling and finding nothing wrong. I did find a sign that something is wrong The other day. And I am glad I found it.

I have a 1990 f-250 7.3.....Ok On top of the engine you have your 8 fuel lines running to the Injectors? If thats what they are called. Its where they run into the engine right above the glow plugs... OK well one Of them is leaking, Pretty bad. It is leaking about half way down. Seems to be some sort of spacer there, Right in between that and the part you tighten to the engine is leaking. Its leaking pretty fast when its running. Enough to fill up the around the glow plugs and fill up the top of the intake... Yeah not good with Fuel prices... Anyways any one have any suggestions here on what this might be or how to fix it? Its parked till I get it fixed.

Is the device you are describing on the passenger side front injector?

That is number 1 cylinder and the spacer is actually the pulse timing adapter.

Carefully loosen the nut on the injection line, then tighten the timing adapter and then retighten the injection line.

The way Dave came off this must be a somewhat common problem.

I just got my first IDI (1984) a few weeks ago. Mine was leaking out of the top of the #1 injector also. I took a 5/8 to it, tightened it about 1/8 turn and it quit leaking.

I wish all fixes were that easy.

Thanks guys for the info... It is not Cyl #1 it is the 3rd one going looking from the front of the engine on the passenger side. I thought It might just needed to be tightened but I didn't have any tools with me of that size.Basically Everything should be tight there I am guessing. I will take a look and try to tighten it tomorrow and let you guys know how it goes.

the return line fitting o rings are leaking you can buy a return line repair kit
and replace all 16 orings also replace all of the return hoses

Thanks Ford trans.... The return Hoses you are talking about are the rubber hoses that are connected to all the injectors?

yes the return line hoses are the little hoses that are about five inches long that run between each injector and hook into the return line caps

On an F series the timing adapter will be on cylinder 1, front passenger side cylinder.

So if what you are looking at is on the third from the front cylinder passenger side the only thing it could be is the return tee.

Return lines leaking is a common problem.
The timing adapter leaking is not a common problem, but the way you have to loosen the injection line, then tighten the timing adapter, then tighten the injection line, I can see how someone might not get it tight.

The adapter statement threw me off.

Leaking Fuel!!

I posted a thread on here a while back about my truck leaking Fuel, I couldnt seem to find the Post.... Well My truck has just been sitting cause I havent had the time to look at it... Well after further examination the Fuel that is leaking seems to be coming from the top of one of the Fuel injectors, Where the Fuel Line goes in to it. The Nut that Holds the Fuel Line on to the injector is the one I am talking. It doesn't seem to be seated down all the way but I lossened it up and And Tightened it again and it is still leaking, Is there a seal in there that could have went bad?

Is there a O ring in the Middle where the Fuel Line Connects to the injector? Say I take the Metal Fuel line off and Pull the metal hose off the injector.... It is leaking from the bottom of the Fuel Line nut, The is where I can see it coming out and seeping down to on the Injector then down into the Glow plug slots.

I merged your posts.

There are two O rings under the return tee's which is the plastic part right below the injection line nut that the return hoses are attached to.

Return line and O ring leaks are common, you need a return line kit which will have new tees, enough O rings and enough fuel line to replace them all.

When you do this job, change all the O rings and lines at once, then don't disturb them or they will start leaking again.

About the only way for the high pressure injection line to leak is either the line is cracked or someone has cross threaded the line nut at some time in the past.

The top of the return tee is so close to the bottom of the line nut, it would be easy to think the line nut was leaking.

Thanks, I just inside from looking at it again, it is coming out from the T that you are talking about when I touch it or Move it it comes out more... So there are O rings inside that T to connect the Hoses? Yes I plan to get The Whole Kit and do it all at one time... My wife has to use my other truck tomorrow So I was trying to do a quick fix on that one But I guess I will have to wait and do the whole thing at once..... So Driving it while it is leaking a little Like it is can not be safe? I drove it for a few weeks not even knowing it was like that, I always wondered when it was raining out side why did it look like a flowing rainbow behind my truck. Then I looked into it more and found that problem.

Changing the return lines and O rings should take less than 2 hours, even for your first time.

Be careful when you loosen the nuts, make sure the nut is turning on the injection line.
Sometimes they stick to the injection line which could crimp the line if you turned the nut to far with the line stuck to it.

Just move the injection line enough to get the tee off, you don't want to bend them much at all.

Remove one entire side of tees, then make up the entire bank and install it that way is the best approach.

The old O rings are a bit hard to get out of the groves in the injector sometimes, I carefully cut them with a razor blade when they get that way.

When installing the new O rings, install the top one first, then roll the bottom one across the top one.
That reduces the chance of cutting or tearing the O ring and reduces frustration considerably.
After the O rings are in place, a liberal coat of motor oil on the O rings and inside the return tee will make installation of the tee much easier.
Press it down firmly but carefully till you feel the O rings snap into place.

Now reinstall the injection lines, make sure you have the nuts started on the injectors correctly, not cross threaded, and tighten them.

Leaking fuel, with todays costs is not good, and is not good for the enviroment either.
That said, diesel leaking on the engine is not nearly as dangerous as leaking gasoline is.

Thanks a Bunch Dave For those Tips and Instructions. Sounds like it is not to hard. The Cheapest Place to get the kit would be Adiesel.com?? They want to much money at the Auto Part stores in my area.

Yeah I know its Not Good For Environment, Or the Truck. That is why its parked right now. And Yes No Sense in waisting liquid Gold. I drive it to the Gas station every now just So it doesnt sit to long unused. Man Does that Diesel smell in the truck when its leaking.

Anyways Thanks again for the Info, I just gotta get the Kit and Find Some time.
