stupid question
I have a 79 f150 4X4 w/300, the rear pinion is shot. I have a 79 f150 4X4 w/360 and i was wondering if i can swap the front and rear pumpkins into my 6 cyl. unit or would the v8 ratio be too much of a jump. also since i am really lazy
(I dont mind crawling around on the ground but it is always easier when you know what ur looking for) could anyone tell me how to locate the axle code locations for the front and rear axles and how to identify the gear ratios if the ratio tags have been removed. Since i know i dont know much any help would be greatly appreciated.
The standard ratio for a 4x4 F-150 in 79 was 3.50, it doesn't matter if it was the 6 cylinder motor, the 351M motor or the 400.
The only other gear choice that was an option for the 6 cylinder was the 4.11.
Optional gear choices for the 351M/400 were the 3.00 or a 4.11.
In 79 they did not use a 360. The only engine choices were the 6 cylinder, a 351M or a 400. Mind you this is for 4x4 only as that is what you posted. They did use the 460 motor in 4x2.
The front D44 should have a tag on the diff cover. It would be located on the passenger side of the cover in the center retained by two bolts. If there is no tag you can jack up the truck and turn the tire while watching the # of times the driveshaft turns. 3 1/2 turns would be a 3.50, 4 turns would be a 4.11.
Oh and instead of calling the thread "stupid question", "help me", etc... put the actual problem in the title. It makes it easier to come up in the search feature in the future. This thread title would of made more sense labeled "axle question".
. LOL. Anyway your post was very helpful and I truely appreciate you helping me not only with the "stupid question" but with good informative solutions for my post. This is very cool. Matter of fact I am going to turn a few of my ford buddies onto this site, I think they might find the site very helpful also.
lol I love these emoticons.
However the ratios are all interchangeable, as long as they match front axle to back axle.
I wonder how large of tires your running and what ratio you have now.
