Another 4.0?

Will the 4.0 bolt up to the manual tranny and motor mounts on an 86 bronco II. I know you need the harness and computer. With the 4.0 being from the same engine family as the 2.8 and 2.9, I would think it would be a bolt in, more or less.

It should bolt up, though you may need a different clutch to bolt onto the 4.0 flywheel. The main concern is how long will that 5 speed hold up. Do you know which 5 speed you have (TK5, FM145, FM146)? In an '86 I would expect a TK5 or FM145, but either way those three transmissions are considered a little iffy behind a 2.9. They are considered more "iffy" behind the 4.0 with more torque. One doesn't usually swap to a 4.0 so he can feather the throttle.

It's probably not as dire as I've made it out to be, but there is some concern as to how long those internals will hold up to the 4.0. Just as long as you are aware of the possibility.

Thanks for the reply and help. I guess the M5OD would be a better choice for a tranny.
