Hey I own a 1970 model F-100 with a mild built 428 FE. I currently have a C6 behind it but am looking to get a manual trans for it and need a little help. I know that there are adapters and all I just need 2 know what transmission 2 go with. I've been looking at top loaders with higher 4th gear ratios. I don't want a 1.00 ratio as my last gear thats what the c6 has and its killing my rpms and top speed. Any ideas or suggestions are needed thanx.
OK, I'll try to help... Is it 2 or 4 wheel drive? Not sure if you are expecting a speed shift type manual trans or just something that is a 5 or 6 speed with overdrive and strong enough to handle the power. Truck trans generally don't like to be speed shifted.
I am definatly not familure with your engine. The trans mount bolt pattern or the transmissions that where available. I see you have a c6 trans. Does it use an adapter plate? Or does it bolt up direct? If it bolts up direct find out if it is the same pattern as, say the 460? You might get lucky here because the c6 came with the 460. If it is the same then you can probably start searching for a trans that will fit a 460. I feel if you can get a trans to bolt without an adapter it will be better and CHEAPER.
I had a link that told of transmission vs. adapter vs. engines but I can't locate it. Here is a link that will give you some options to start your search.
I would start with the ZF trans and then look around. Remember the ZF came in two or 4 wheel version AND gas or Diesel versions. They have different gear ratios to better match engine rpm. Good luck in the search. All it takes is a little $$$!
Forget the ZF. The adaptors for FE to other patterns are used for automatic transmissions. I doubt it would work for a manual. For $650 or so for the adaptor, do you want to be the test bed?
For a "truck" type transmission in 5 speed, the NV4500 is the better answer.
Forget the OD toploaders. The top shift & SROD models will not hold up to your 428. The iron case side shifted unit has the shifter in the wrong place and OD (4th) won't hold up to your engine either. You could baby it, but you'll tire of the gap between 2nd and 3rd and eventually you'll have trouble.
A TKO will handle the power, not sure about the GVW. See chart:
FWIW: You should stick with your C6. How fast are you trying to go, anyway? What gears do you have? If I did anything to this, it would be a GV OD unit. Yea, I know they aren't cheap, but you're running a modded 428 in a truck, so you must be rich or able to forgo food and housing for vehicle mods.
My truck is 2 wheel drive and the ratio in the trans is 1to1 in 3rd gear. A c6 for a 460 will not bolt up. As for money im only 17 (parents, no bills) and was working lots of hours back home but am now in college in Nashville and havent got a job yet. I need a new trans not only to go faster (TP 120) but also to lower my Rpms on the interstate. At 70mph with 3.50 gears I was taching 3200 RPMs, so I switched gears to 3.25 and added fords limited slip(rare) and am now taching 2800 RPMs at 70. I do want to go faster who doesn't and am just wanting a manual trans. The NV4500 is geared way to high 6.35 in first what about a T-56 or any kits to strenghthen any other trans. And what was that about an overdrive for a C6. Thanx for the reply.
There is no OD C6, but the Gear Vendors OD can be bolted to one.
I must say you are a damn fool to drive one of these trucks (or almost any car or truck for that matter) 120 mph.
The Tremec sites I posted give the info on those transmissions and companies that sell them.
Your diff is probably a 9 inch Ford. To save gas and a lot of money vs. these transmission changes, go to a 3.0 or 2.75 or so. You have plenty of torque and the TC will help you on the low end anyway. Since you are looking to break land speed records instead of drag racing, the loss of low end shouldn't bother you too much.
I'm not looking to break land speed records????? I just want a trans thwt allows a strong takeoff and still be abled to be carried on the interstate. Thanks anyway.
There are folks who offer wide ratio C6 gear sets or transmissions equipped that way along with the standard hop-up stuff. A lower first gear would help you pull the tall axle ratio for stronger launch, with the taller axle helping top speed and lower revs on the road. Even with a gear change, less money than a GV. Less work than MT swap.
