Cant figure it out

ok well i have posted several times about this before and i gotta get it fixed its driving me nutz. when im driving i come up to a stop light and right when i STOP "not moving, brakes on" i get this wierd grinding noise from some where. it starts small. while stopped the harder i push the brake it gets louder. if i turn the wheel it gets louder. this is all while stopped not moving. if i accelerate a bit it stops. when it idols back down it starts again. throw it in park it quits. driving down my dirt road 5 to 10mph every med to lg bunp or dip on the compression of the suspension i can hear it. if im turnning into a parkin space i hear it. if i turn and accelerate i dont hear it. its really strange. i replaced the ps pump syn atf and all. im thinkin maby a ps pully or brake booster. or i think their is a sensor for the ps when engne is at idol. maby the steering gear box. i need all the advice suggestions i can get its gotta stop. im gunna be away from my pc most of the weekend yall try and commute and come up with something thanks a ton!!!!!!!!

It really sounds to me that it is centered around the PS Pump itself. Hard to tell if you just flushed the pump or flush and replace.

Ditto for me. Especially since it grinds when the front suspension is compressed which would resist the pump keeping it on track.

Ya im with them on the ps pump idea... Have you checked the fluid? Try flushing the fluid and putting in a synthetic...

I was thinking the TC also, Dan, but when he said that the harder he pushed on the brake pedal, the louder it got made me agree on the power steering pump. Since the brake boost comes from the hydraulic ps system, that would make the connection. It will be interesting to see what the culprit was.

hey guys im back long weekend real busy so this is what yall came up with... good to tje mikes... i recently changed the ps pump it made the noise befor and also after. i put full synthetic atf in as well. dan tc um not real shure.. like i said it increases when i turn or am turing or holding down the brake while in drive gear put it in netrual and it goes away. im not shure if thats it. mark ive read a thread a long time ago bout flushing the ps system using a long funnel and a milk jug full of fluid was described in that method. any ideas that may help. i tried to go back and find that thred and cant find it. also it only dose it when i stop with the truck fully stopped in gear take it out of gear into park and it quits. i read some where bout a ps while in idol sensor. is their such a thing. also sometimes i get a tough spot in my steering stroke. bout 1/2 way through stopped or barley moving its hard to turn. could the gear box be bad is it under pressure? just troubble shooting questions... thanks

Dan is the man, but you can eliminate that diagnosis by putting it in park and pushing the brake, then turn the wheel to where the problem area is. Your park making it go away observation may just be due to a higher idle giving the pump more juice coupled with the release of the brake pedal in park. Not to mention you are no longer turning the wheel.

yea its really strange. bout what u said in the end. when i come to a stop and become fully stopped holding the brake down the noise starts... turn the wheel it increases in loudness and slight vibration more of a gurrrrrrrr not a whine. while its making the noise foot on brake or the wheel turned or both i can put it in park and it goes away. while in park turning or pushing the brake it dosent do it.. man im stumped. but what ever it is its not normal and cant be good

my pump has always growled a little with brake pressure and a little more when I turn the wheel
there is a TSB on the 2000 trucks about it
after 7 yrs I've got use to it

Check the bolts holding the transmission to the engine. Also, try to get an eye on the starter disc bolts holding the disc to the crank shaft. My theory is that when you are stopped and turning the wheel in gear, the engine is creating torque causing a noise if the bolts are loose. Might also be the motor mounts allowing the fan to hit the shroud. Just gotta keep looking, you will find it.

My truck started making the same noise last year. After a couple weeks I couldn't take the annoyance any longer, got on FTE and saw the flush procedure with Syn ATF, tried it, and it worked.....no more of the noise that would sound/come just as you describe.

TSB is technical service bulletin issued by ford

99-2000 F-Series Power Steering Noise (part number correction):
Some of these trucks with the PowerStroke engine may exhibit power steering noise. If this noise is objectionable, there is a revised P/S line for between the P/S pump and Hydrobooster--YC3Z-3A717-AA.
