I am looking for headers to fit a 351 windsor block in a 1977 F-150 4x4, and i cant find nothing, i was praying someone might be able to point me in the right direction, i would like to know if any 302 applications will work or 351w headers for a 1980 F-150 4x4 will work, i would like not to have to get custom headers made. Hopefully some one out there has encountered this problem before or someone has put a windsor in there truck, any help would be appreciated thanks
I haven't had done that with a 351w, but I did with a 302. I couldn't get headers that would clear my transmission. I had to end up useing shorty headers for a 79 - 93 fox chassis mustang. Easy thing to find, fairly cheap, and will work just fine. I personally would rather have the long tubes, but thats just my .02 hope this helps you out.
Thanks man, i really would not like to use shorty headers for fear they will choke my 408, but if i have to then i guess i have to. Mustang shorties will clear on my 4x4 ?
I don't see why the shorty headers would not work. They are esentually a tubular manifold. I ran them on my 79 ford 2 w/d, then the same set in 74 bronco, 4x4 with the same 302, then sold them to a friend, and he put them on his i think 89 ish f-150 4x4 302 fuelie. So they should fit. What kind of power is your 408 makeing? That will kinda of determine what tube size you need. I am no professional, but I do know the long tubes make more power on the sbf than the shorty's do. but per application, i am not sure what to tell you. I have a 408 w in my bronco ( in my pic there ) and I had a customer set of outside the frame headers made. There are some options. How handy are you with a welder? Another option would be to check over in the "small block v8" section on this forum. Conanski seems to know a lot about the sbf, and usually posts or shimes in on most posts that i have seen over there, maybe even pm him. Just a thought.
My 408 will be making around 400 hp and close to 500 lbs of torque, i would love to run long tubes to get the most out of my combination, i have 2 welders but im no master welder for shure. How much did it cost you to get custom headers made
Sorry I don't have any information to offer you as far as what headers fit, but if you go with one of those custom kits since you have a welder how about tacking everything in place and pay someone to do the finish welding if you are not comfortable. At least you will save the labor cost of doing custom headers
Thats a good idea, i just might try that. Do you guys think headers for a 1980 351w f-150 4x4 will fit on my 77'. I know they changed the body style in 1980 but could they be that different
My custom headers were a smokin deal. Was one of those friend kinda thins, but look to spend around $400 - $600 for a set of customer made headers. My 408, I am not sure of the power it makes. I would guess between 400 - 500 hp. I am not doing the "yeah it's 550 hp" hp. I'd rather say 400 and have 450, if ya know what I mean. For yours, if it is for a street driven truck I'd say 1 5/8 would be fine, 1 3/4 if it's more of a racer/ toy truck. Go to big on the pipe and you'll loose power, but I'm sure you knew that. We used 1 3/4 on mine. Mine has the RHS aluminum heads on, so I had to buy the flanges and go from scratch. Fairly simple to do, kinda. Send me a pm, we can get in touch, and maybe figure something out for you,
the primary tubes for long tube headers are smaller then what you find on shorties. BBK has the largest tubes that i know of and the collector as well is larger then most shorty available. What heads are you running on your motor? if they are GT40P heads then going to a custom header is probably your only solution anyway. long tubes will give you a little better bottom end vs the shorty version but honestly with your build it wont matter.
Thanks for the help guys, the heads im using are Patriot freedom series aluminum, im not even shure what mustang shorties will even fit them i got to look it up on there website. It looks like im going to have to use the shorties. Its a shame no companies make swap headers
