I am going to be pulling the pumpkin cover off the rear and do a fluid/gasket change. While I'm at it, I'm also going to do the front. (1996 F250 4x4)
I did already go in and at least make sure the fluid in both diffs were full. While pulling the rear pumpkin cover is easy enough, I did not see how on earth I should be draining the front. How do you go about this? Please do not tell me to get a tube and siphon it out...
Your 4WD F250 has a solid Dana 50, right? I have used a suction gun to change the gear oil in my car before, so it is do-able, as long as you can get the tube all the way down to the bottom.
Yeah, I wouldn't bother with a siphon either. Suction gun is a good way to go, and cheap...you can get them sometimes at the discount places or the discount bin at the major chains for just a few bucks.
What I've found to work best, however, is a vacuum. No, not the wifes upright. Princess Auto in Canada, (and I suspect harbour freight in the US,) has a vacuum oil extractor that works like a bicycle pump. Put the hose down into the bottom of the cavity you want to drain, and pump it a few times and wait for it to suck air. You can also get pneumatic powered ones that you just hook an air line to and turn them on. Then you don't have to pump. They will work best when the fluid is warm. The bicycle style one is worth about 60-70 bucks and the nice pneumatic one will run close to 175...

The 1996 F-250 4x4 should have a TTB, not a solid axle.
