Hey guys, I was driving home yesterday and when my truck is in 2nd gear it slips and jumps to 3rd then back to 2nd slips again revs up and pops into 3rd. If I stomp on it, it seems to pull good. WHATS WRONG????? Have I lost 2nd gear? do i need to overhaul the tranny? If i do then im going to do it myself. any tips or parts recomendations? Thanks. 2000 crew 4x4 7.3L
Do you have a temp gauge? If it's slipping, the trans should be running hotter than usual. First things first, drain some fluid and take a look at it. ATF should be a translucent red, if it's brown it may just need replacement, if it has particles floating, then you have a more serious problem.
ironicly the temp guage failed a few months ago. and the fluid smells really bad. but it is slipping i think. will a torque converter do this in only one gear? I wouldn't think so.
Has anybody rebuilt these? Do you have any tips? special tools?
Hi folks, I have a 91 F350 dually w/ 7.3 litre diesel and my tranny started slipping ,for a few seconds then stopped, after sitting about 15 mins it went another cpl of blocks , towed it home the next day went forward 20 ft, reverse 20 ft , did that twice and then it would not do anything, ok I am a carpenter not a tranny mechanic , how much trouble am I in and what is next , replace the tranny? Lord I hope not, any hope of saving this without costing a fortune? Bill
the temp guage stopped working it could have solenoid or wiring issues. They are in the same package in the trans. It may just have been an electrical issue, but now it sounds like it will be time for an overhaul since the fluid has issues as well.
Tampa check the trans fluid level first. (dipstick will be at the back of the motor, probably on the passenger side, handle is likely red. The color/location may be different on the older setups so just look around for the dipstick going down to the trans. Its back there somewhere!) If it gets low on fluid it can fall out of gear. Make sure the engine is running when you check the level. Its supposed to be done with everything warm from driving, so it will read a lil low when cold. I would make sure its still in the crosshatch area when cold, if its low in the crosshatch or below the crosshatch add a quart of fluid and see if the trans works again. If it does get it up to operating temps and check the fluid and fill to the middle of the cross hatches.
Hopefully thats all it is. Its a fluid coupling in the torque converter, so low fluid = no go.
