I have to slightly disagree with the statement that mud tires the same size as stock will not 'eat' horsepower. Any time you put on a tire that is heavier than the tire it is replacing, performance will be sacrificed. I replaced my stock tires with BFG muds, and noticed a small, although very small difference in acceleration characteristics. Then I replaced those with the TRXUS, which of course y'all know I like a bit better than the BFGs and I noticed a big difference in acceleration. Now, I have a 460 cu.in. engine, so it's not that big of a problem. However, someone with a small eight or a six is going to notice the heavier tires!
Besides, as said above already, why worry about mud tires on the road? You'll enjoy the lug rumble too much to concern yourself with any 'lost' horsepower!
Well there isn't much of a weight difference from say a 31" BFG mud and a 31" regular touring tire. The acceleration/power loss you see is more than likely a combo of a weight and tire size. A tire's diameter has a large effect of power.
