I agree with TRX DO NOT jack up your vehicle by the 3rd member. It is not designed to take that kind of load, lift at frame or at spring/shock mount area only. IMHO

Darn! Good to know. You would have thought I would have had at least one problem since I started doing in back in 1962 and since I worked at a car lot for 8 of those years. I must have just been lucky several hundred times. I guess I'll just keep doing it until I get unlucky.
My F-150 is just coming up on 5,000 miles and I plan to rotate my tires this weekend. What a timely post. My plan was to lift the front, put under some jack stands - then lift up the rear and use two more jack stands. All 4 wheels off the ground at one time. I would paint my calipers and rotate the tires. Just wasn't sure where to place the jack in the rear. The pumpkin is right in the middle, the manual says not to jack there.
Can I use the pumkin? What is the other choice? Either I use it or I can't lift the rear off the ground.....
Davko, The manual states NOT to lift vehicle by the third member for a reason. Course you could be as lucky as Osbork. Why not lift at the shock mount? Course if you feel as lucky as Osbork you could try lifting the front by putting the jack under the OILPAN!
why are you just changing/rotating the front and back tires on the same side? I thought on 4x4's you should criss-cross the fronts the back? (Front left goes to the back right, front right goes to the back left, back tires just go straight forward to the front without criss-crossing)
If you have directional tires you cannot rotate them any other way than from the front to back keeping them on the same side.

Good for you. How does that help the OP?

Obviously jacking under the pumpkin is the same as jacking under the oilpan.

The pumpkin is the center section of the rear differential. It is the part that hangs down right in the middle.
Here It Is Plain And Simple ! (take No Offense) But If You Need Directions On How To Propperly Lift Your Truck Then You Probably Should Not Be Rotating Your Own Tires ! Leave It To The Pro's-just Add Washer Fluid , Crank Up The Tunes , And Ride Like The Wind !:-x18

So he is not allowed to learn how to rotate his tires? The guy was asking a question on what the best way to go is. Even the pros had to start somewhere.

Dikhead.
ok, so is it cool to jack up the pumpkin or will it bust like after halloween?
How about 2 jack stands holding up the front wheels, and then jack up the back in the centre of the trailer hitch area?
There are people on here who will have a canyption fit if they hear about somebody jacking on the pumpkin, but I have yet to see anybody cause damage by doing it. That is the way that I jack up all of my vehicles.
I would put the 2 jack stands on the front and then simply jack up the side of the rear that you are taking the tire off of and put the one from the front back on it right away. Does that make sense?
