Hello all I have a 1990 F-250 with a 460 and a E40D transmission. It doesn't move real well. I purchased it a month ago for plowing purposes. Before I yank it, for maybe no reason at all Ill post what the guy told me. Trans works for 60 seconds then makes sucking sound then won't work,shut off truck come back 15 minutes later and it works again for 60 seconds. Is trans filter plugged? Front end clunks too in 4wd. The trans fluid looks pretty burnt also. Any ideas? Anything is much appreciated. Thanks
Fluid draining back from the TC when its shut off allowing it to get a gear briefly on each restart until it runs dry again from the filter not being up in place correctly?
Burnt fluid is never a good sign, but if dropping the pan you did find the filter laying in the bottom of it, you might just get lucky and save it with a new filter and a complete fluid change. As well as making sure it has a added fluid cooler and a working clutch fan that can and does pull air through it.
At any rate you will need both of them to plow snow with it without overheating it.

Cool, That was the first thing I was going to try, I think after it quit working the guy let it sit, so maybe its salvagable. Let you know next week when I get the chance. Thanks alot!
The fluid draining back could still be a problem depending on how bad it is and how you treat it if it does.
It may take a day or two of not driving the truck to allow enough to drain back to make it not want to move right away. It may only take over night, if you find it will not move right away allow it to run for a few minute before trying to make it go.
Then shift from drive to reverse a couple times without trying to make it move. Once its been running a few minutes and you shift in out of gear a time or two to let it pump it will then be ready to go. As long as you do that every time you shouldn't have any problems with it because of it. Just don't ever try and make it move until it is ready to do so.
It also helps to park with the rear up higher then the front if you can easy enough, slight incline of your driveway would help with it.
Make sure the red seal for the filter is not stuck up in the filter hole, be sure and fully insert the new filter.
If your not aware the TC has a drain, Black rubber plug at bottom of the bell housing, remove it then rotate the motor until you see the little TC drain plug up through the hole. With the new filter and pan back on put in 5 or 6 quarts of fluid then start it running the shifter from L to D and R and then add a couple more, shift throughout the gears and add a couple more, repeat.
It will take 16 to 17 quarts to refill the tranny from empty (4x4 model).
The front end clunk is likely to be just a bad u-joint, could be more then one bad. But could be a more serious problem if it continues to clunk/bang when driven.
when you pull the pan to do the fluid swap-if the pan has a bunch of clutch material and the magnet is coated heavily with metal-you might need a rebuild-just got a message from a guy on another forum had the same problem as you-would work cold as soon as it got warm no go! good luck!
