Here's my situation. My (second) gray CPS that I picked up from Ford is running like crap half the time and ok the other half. I mosey down to the International dealer and request one of their CPS's for the DT466 (part #1807339C2). They told me that International just changed their part numbers so I figure what the heck and get it anyway (new part #1885812C91). I go to put it in and it won't work. On the CPS's for our trucks the plug-in is tilted slightly away from the flat edge that sits next to what I think is the harmonic balancer. The CPS with the new part # has the plug tilted slightly toward the flat edge so the plug will rub on the balancer if installed. The International dealer suggested we turn the CPS 180 degrees in the metal bracket and try that. Tried it but now the plug would sit against the block and eventually melt from the heat. Also, the CPS for the DT466 that a lot of guys have been using with great success isn't blue anymore, it's gray with a black bottom. The International dealer was kind enough to credit me back for the CPS since it didn't work and told me he had the ones for the 444E for around $20. Those are solid gray and the old part # on those is 1825899C93 and the new part # is 1876735C91. Now here's the question: is the CPS International has for the 444E the same crap one that Ford is selling?
Sorry for the long post. Just trying to figure this out.
I hadn't heard of this yet. Thanks for sharing the info. I have no idea if the new gray one from Ford is any different from the new gray IH version. It almost sounds like they got a new supplier for the CPS since the blue one has changed also.
Did you happen to check the shape of the new gray CPS from IH to see if it had changed any?
The gray one from IH (for the 444E) was the right shape, but not the one for the DT466. The dealer said last shipment he got in some of the blue ones and some of the new ones and he said he'd keep an eye out for a blue one for me.
Anybody else know if the one for the 444E from IH is the same as the new gray one from Ford? I've already got 2 of the gray ones from Ford and would hate to have 3 and them all be the exact same.
Some computer oriented electronics tech needs to build us a REAL CPS!!!!! molded in RED!!!!! there has got to be a way to cut these things open and figure out what makes them work or NOT WORK and fix it once and for all!!! all this trouble for everyone to keep changing these units is just plain rediculous!!!!!

It's a magnet that reads grooves (square indentions) in the cam gear. We may need more than a computer oriented electronics guru to figure it out.
I'm going to send one to a friend of mine who has had several 7.3 trucks in the past and is an electronics guru and I'll bet he can figure something out as to whats going on....

Let us know. The sensor is reading the square grooves on the cam gear, paying particular attention to the big & little grooves to give timing reference to the PCM
Went deer hunting this morning. Went back to my truck when I was done hunting. No start. Plugged my code scanner in. CPS. Its the third one I have had go bad in the last year. Called everyone I knew couldnt get a hold of anyone. So.... I walked a mile and half to my work and my dad is coming to get me right now. Then im gonna have to change the sensor out in a muddy field. Not looking forward to it.

The gray Ford CPS, that I have still in the package, has a 7EO1 stamped on the top of the plug socket. I am wondering if the gray IH one has the same number or did Ford manufacture their own version, instead of a reboxed IH part.
I'm starting to believe this is a conspiricy issue.....I can't believe that many manufacturers make these CPS units.......I think they might just be making these things prone to fail at certain mileage/hour intervals.
Dang!!! This seems like a lot of troubles!!! I had my Excurion CPS recall done at Ford in January. Now, I'm usually kind of curious, but I didn't climb under it to see what color it was!! I have had zero issues with mine. After I had it done, I found the previous owner had left me a spare in the glove box. Black in color!! Whoo-hoo!!! Now, let's see how long before I have to change it!!
Found a couple of the blue ones. Possibly OHalloran IH in Des Moines has some. Phone 515-967-3300. I found them at one of their branch locations and was told that they were the blue ones. $127.35 each. That's a lot more than a Ford one but if it works as well as some say they do, it will be worth it.
