am i able to put a 74 390fe big block in my 86 f250 and if i have to make any chages what would they be
The FE big block engines will fit into an 80s F series truck but, as Dave indicates, the modifications required are extensive. It pretty much falls into the class of "if you have to ask if it can be done, you probably shouldn't do it".
At least one other user on this site has done this but he has the skills to do the job and get it working right. A real good mechanic can do this. I can't. I'd love to have a 390 in my '84 F250 but would not attempt an engine swap of this difficulty.
A souped-up 351W or 400M V8 would be better choices for most driveway mechanics to swap in than trying to stuff a 390 in there.
Another consideration is whether or not you have any emissions tests to pass with that vehicle. If you do, the 390 is unlikely to pass since it came from a time before most of today's smog controls were put on trucks. You could add a catalytic converter easily enough but other things like computerized fuel control, air pumps, and variable distributor and valve timing just aren't in the cards for the old 390 engine.
Hi, I have seen this style truck with the 460 in them, but it was "full" under the hood. I think the others gave you some good answers. You would have to change trany and probably some drive shaft work as well as frame mounts, exhaust manifold clearance, steering box clearance, etc. It may be simpler to get or build a good 351 and it will fit easyer, JMO.
i have done moter swaps and am used to working on dodge and chevy (thats what all of my frends have) like this in the past. just bacame a ford entusiast and all i need to know is if the bellhuoseing on my c6 is the same as the one on the 360. asking is somuch easer than trying to squze under the hood and get a mesurement of the bolt patern in my truck. if i have to i can make an adapter plate. the rest i can do
