I know this will open a can of worms but I will ask anyway. I was planing on installing the oil guard system. Then I started thinking about which oil to run. I have had a good experience with Amsoil products. If I was going to order their oil I might as well order their bypass system as well and it cheaper to boot. I plan on extending my intervals slightly to maybe 8K to 10K so Im not so sure I need amsoil. Will Mobil 1 Syn 5/40 work just as well with that short of an interval. If I use Mobil 1 I guess that makes the bypass system just a personal preference issue. Whats everyones experience been on this?
I wouldn't recommend trying to extend the oil drain interval on the 6.0. This engine tends to shear the oil down to a 30 weight after about 5000 miles.
I had read that you couldn't real do extended intervals on the 6.0 but I didn't realize the intervals were as short as 5k. I thought for sure with a good synthetic you could squeeze 8 to 10 out of the oil.
What ever oil you decide to go with be sure to have a UOA done @ about 4500 to 5000 miles. Then you can decide how much longer to run it. These 6.0 engines are pretty hard on oil because it is the engine oil that is pressured up to fire the injectors. Trying to save money by extending oil changes out too far is kind of risky. Good luck on your choice.
If that's the case why run synthetic. I might as well just run regular Mobil Delvac with a bypass filter and change it every 5k. The bypass should keep even the dino oil spotless at 5k intervals.
Synthetics give a little better heat and wear protection. If you are going to stick with a 5000 mile OCI then a good dino should do just fine. Personally I like synthetics and the extra protection they offer for my applications. Do a little research. You might check out bob is the oil guy .com
I run dino during the warmer months, and syn in the colder months. The syn helps cold starts immensely.
IMO, because of oil shearing in the 6.0 , the lower pouring temps of the syn is the only worthwhile benefit over the dino. Slightly better fuel mileage from syn is more than offset by the switch to blended fuels in the colder months.
With a 15 quart refill capacity, Ford recommends 7,500 mile change interval on the 6.0.
With a 19 quart refill capacity, International recommends a 10,000 mile change interval on the VT365.
Up to individual to decide if the addition of a bypass system and the resulting increase of oil volume might have a similar effect on projected oil life.
