He threw in a new seat, put $20 in the tank, and helped me install a new master cylinder and bleed the brakes. The are still a little soft, though. When I mash the brake, the truck doesn't stop as quick as it should. It also pulls hard left when I hit the brakes hard. But it is driveable for now. Still having the idle issue. Hope its a vacuum leak somewhere. And the power steering cylinder is leaking like a siv, but it's fairly new and I can't tell where its coming from. Does have a small coolant leak. Think it's just a matter of repositioning the clamp on the bottom of the radiator. She isn't pretty, but she runs, drives, etc. One step at a time. Take a look at my flickr page and tell me what you think!
I think it's an OEM carb. 2-barrel. It doesn't look like it's in bad shape. I was thinking about doing a carb kit but I've only ever owned fuel injected so it's new to me. As far as brakes-I replaced the master cylinder and bled them. I don't see any leaks other than a small coolant drip and the PS leak. The brakes are MUCH better than they were before, but not like they should be. The inside of the tires aren't wet, so the wheel cylinders should be good, right? And the power steering thing in the picture is supposedly newer, but who knows. The guy did also throw in brand new PS hoses so I'm gonna try those and see what happens. BTW, what exactly is that PS part called? The one in the picture that is leaking? It's not the cylinder or pump, right?
I fought an issue with my brakes being soft too. The inside of the tires were not wet either, but it ended up being the wheel cylinders. They are a cheap fix, and well worth doing.
Great deal, I am also always looking for a fixer upper. I just replaced the carb on my 79. It is a stock 2bbl on the 390. I rebuilt the old one but the people that had it before me made to many customizations that I couldn't get it to idle smoothly so I went to the store and bought an original replacement 2150. Idles and runs like a new one. Good luck with your journey.
I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong, but your truck should have "power assist" steering. If your ram is leaking, save yourself a bunch of money and a lot of heart burn and upgrade to true power steering. Get the parts from a '78 or '79 F250. I have heard that some chebby and dodge steering gears will work as well.
I have a friend who had his assist ram rebuilt. It cost over $500 before he was done, had he still had problems, and 1 year later it's leaking again
rear brakes may be out of adjustment...causing both the pull and soft feel...
prolly wouldnt hurt to bleed the brakes again...its a cheap fix
I think I may do that. I also saw somewhere that since the rears are "self-adjusting" that several starts and stops in reverse might help. Any thoughts?
