99 Ford Expedition Code 1131

Hi All,

Blondie here new to the group. I've got myself a 1999 Ford Expedition, 5.4, 4x4 that has been giving me some problems lately. The Check Engine Light is on and Code 1131 keeps coming up. One mechanic told me it was the oxygen sensors, so had that replaced new and the light went off, but after driving the vehicle for about 10 minutes it came back on. We had it re-set, but the service engine soon light keeps coming on with code 1131. My mechanic has no idea says it could be 1 of 22 different things. I don't have alot of money in my pocket right now, and just need the Truck to pass inspection. I've been dealing with this since Sept., 10, 2008, currently without a running vehicle, and 2 little ones and just getting tired of getting the runaround and sinking money into it. I love my truck and just want to get it on the road again. Any info., would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

This code can be cause by a sever vacuum leak. I'd start by listening for any loud hissing noises under the hood to see if you can find one.

Any idea WHICH O2 sensor he replaced? It should have been the upstream sensor on the passenger side which is quite difficult to get to on a 4 X 4. That fault code is pretty reliable in identifying faulty upstream sensors.

Vacuum leaks typically cause different fault codes.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the response! I took the Truck to a different Mechanic again today and your right he said I needed a third O2 sensor replaced Bank 1 Sensor 1. Previously we had Bank 1 and Bank 2 of the O2 sensors replaced and according to the new Mechanic the one O2 sensor that should of been replaced by my previous Mechanic was not replaced, so basically he put the new O2 sensor on the wrong spot.

Anyways, I'm waiting for my Mechanic to come over and put it on the Truck, so hopefully this will take care of the Check Engine Light problem and I can get it NYS Inspected and back on the road again. I'll keep ya all posted. Many Thanks
