NP203 strength?
I just bought this truck, and it has a 351M/400 in it. (not sure which) I don't plan on doing much to the engine shy of a Full-On Edelbrock parts. I want to use the Edelbrock cam, 600cfm carb, and non-EGR intake. I have a couple burnt valves, so in replacing them, I will also have a 3-angle valve job done.
Thanks,
Matt
The NP 203 is probabley one of the strongest chain drive T cases available.Im not sure who makes the part time kit,but while your in there you may want to do a master rebuild on the entire case,I dont think they(rebuild kits) are very expensive. The 203 has a very stout cast iron case, but doesnt have a super low "low range",(2.01:1,as compared to the BW case at 2.69:1).I dont have a cross section drawing of the 203 in my office here, but one of the few problems with the older T case designs were the use of spur gears instead of planetaries, and they often had more than one main shaft. This tends to make them a little less efficient than say the newer Borg Warners,(which transmit about 98% as compared to 90% for the NP 203).More importantly though is that there are quite a few more load bearing components in the case, meaning good maintenace is required to keep it very reliable.
