Replace Steering Gear: Easy Job, Right?
Its leaking badly out of the bottom of the steering gear. I'm out of town, my son wants to fix it. I told him to just get a rebuilt unit locally, change it out, and we'll rebuild the old unit for experience before returning the core.
Will my boy have any problems installing the steering gear?
Thanks.
Tools, place to work? Safe work practices?
I would not consider it an easy job. I would, for example, consider pulling the carrier of a 9" axle an "easy job" relative to most chassis/drivetrain tasks.
If he has enough experience, I'd set him to work on the first "R" in "R&R", but I'd want to be there for the second.
My complete tool assortment. Working in our driveway in front of the garage, as we always do. Mature kid.
I've personally never changed one. Just wondering if there were any tricks/problems that may not be in a Hayne's book, etc. I'm out of town, and we wants to fix it up for this weekend.
Thanks

Anyway, good luck & I hope to have my son up to this kind of job in the next few years. Congrats on your son & his abilities.
