Tranny trouble!!!

Hey Everybody!

Hope you all have had a good weekend. I have a quick question. How exactly can one tell if a new clutch, throw out bearing, or pressure plate is needed for sure? I finally got my truck back running, and found out why my shifter broke off. It will not go into any gear I try to put it in!!! It grinds as if I am not pushing the clutch at all. And, sometimes, the engine starts lugging down like I am letting off the clutch, but I am not. At first I though it might be out of adjustment, so I crawled underneath and looked at the adjustment rod and found that it was adjusted all the way out already. It was doing great, but that one day it just wouldn't go into gear and I had to force it in to prevent being hit and the shifter broke. I just found out this week end that it may be something internal. I am not too experienced with trannies at all. I do not want to go and buy a clutch and all with out knowing for sure thats what it is......not much money right now but I need my truck for work. And one more thing. One time when I went out to start it, I had the clutch to the floor and as soon as the starter engaged, the truck moved a little. I just need to know how to make sure what is wrong before I buy anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Michael

here's a solution. get an automatic transmission.LOL

I'm not real experienced with that stuff either but kinda sounds like either your clutch is bad or the syncronizers are out on your transmission.

good luck

If the clutch fails to release when you push the pedal down and everything is ajusted properly then you most likely have faulty/broken clutch disk or pressure plate.

No offense man, but if you don't know the answer then why post? It seems like at least half of your posts are "I don't know," "probably" and "that's cool." I don't have any thing against you personally, but I find you mislead people a lot and that's bad for the forum. I'm not trying to start an argument here, but sometimes I feel like all you're trying to do is increase your post count and I think someone needs to say something to you about it. I guess that's not really any of my business, but I feel like sometimes you answer questions just to get your post count up without taking the time to think about whether you are right or not. I don't know if you know this, but people take a lot of stock in what is said on FTE. If you advise someone that a steering wheel will fit or the problem is this or the problem is that, they are very well inclined to spend the money or put in the labor based on the advice given here. I've seen several cases now where you are the first to respond to a thread and you give incorrect advice, and then everyone beneath you has to follow up and correct you. Can you imagine how confusing this must be to the person who asked the question? With that being said, I think you should ease up a bit. If you're unsure of an answer, don't respond. Again Dr. Dirt I am not trying to sling you out or embarass you because you seem like a cool guy, but I think it's time someone pointed this out.

mcovington - if the truck moved when you cranked the starter, your clutch isn't disengaging. This happened on a friend of mine's. What I would suggest is you post this in the clutch\transmission forum, because while this forum is specific to 73-79 Fords, this sounds like a problem related to clutches and transmission in general. I say this because I talk to some guys over on that forum that are really sharp and should be able to help you out. Here is a link to that section of the website.

I'm still learning how to use this forum. LOL. I think I posted this and responded to the wrong response that wasn't a response to me if that makes any sense. Any way. I misunderstood a post and posted the wrong response.

Apologies,
Michael

Thanks FMC
I will do just that, because I tansmissionly challenged! LOL. I wouldn't think the syncros are are out because I just had this transmission put in about six months ago, but it's not impossible I don't guess. Thanks for the link and I will use it.

Suggestion: Have someone work the clutch while you--

--inspect under the dash where the pedal pivots and all related linkages and brackets.

--inspect under the truck, again, all linkages and attachments right up to the bell housing pivot.

Bending, cracked, weakened components will give you this kind of trouble.

1980's trucks had problems with firewall flex. If yours has any rust, you may have that issue.

Good luck & I hope I have understood your post correctly.
