Winterizing routine?

Not sure there's much to do to winterize the Ex but thought I'd post to see if anyone has a particular routine.

Here are some of the things I think I'll do:
  • Test the batts to make sure they're up to snuff
  • Fill the washer fluid reservoir with full strength fluid, not the diluted stuff I use in the summer
  • Test the ESOF engagement
  • Change the fuel filter
  • I have the gold coolant so it's good to go for 200K miles (truck has ~65K now), but I'll do a temp check on that anyway
  • Make sure both bun warmers are working
  • Throw a 100' extension cord in the back in case I need to plug the block heater in at a motel or something
  • Check wiper blades
  • Check rear heater function
What am I missing?

Sounds pretty good.

How about a piece of cardboard or something for a grill block for cold weather?

When would I use that? At what temperature, for how long, etc.

Thanks.

You could start using it now. The Ford PSD cooling system is really over kill. I've used grille blocks on my E350 PSD in summer time while pulling a trailer.

Let me ask a better question. Why would the use of a grill block benefit me? I assume it gets the truck to operating temperature more quickly?

It would reduce the amount of outside air going across the radiator, so, yes, it can get you up to temperature more quickly.

I use a 203 degree thermostat also. Did the same with my E350 pulling in warm months to keep the engine warmer too. I never could get the cooling fan to come on with that set up also.

It's an easy and reversible thing that one can do. You probably remember last year when it was -10 in January. Any little bit helps.

Stock is something like 192 or 195 degrees. The 203 Tstat is available from Diesel Site. It's not a Ford OEM item, and the International part won't fit as the T444E and the PSD have some different internals on the bypass part of the water pump.

Use Google, and that should bring up their web address. I'm not sure what this forum has for posting requirements on possibly non sponsor items.

Wink

Stock (FORD INSTALLED) T-Stat is 195* go check Dieselsite for the billet T-Stat housing, 203 T-Stat, and their great coolant filter setup if you haven't already got one-also get nes bolts for the housing while you are at it-from an International dealer if possible .27-.36 each v/s over 3.00 each from Ford.

Yeah, replace the T-stat housing. The OEM Fords are stamped. I did a billet one too, but I don't know if it's necessary.
