I looked at a 2002 Supercrew today. 101,000 miles on the 5.4. I have never had a 5.4 (have a 95 with a 300). It has power everything, auto, 4x4, and seemed to run good. Is there anything special I should look for? and should I consider buying?
i bought mine with 125k miles and now has 175k. At 100k miles, its time for spark plugs. Check the lower ball joints and see if they have zerks on them. If not, they are probably factory units and will soon need chagned out. Same for the rear drive shaft universals. I also had excess wear in the front idler arm bushings that bolts to the frame under the radiator. My tie-rods are still like new. Alternators i think go 150k so i changed mine out about that time before it crapped out. Battery is about 5-6 year unit, so thats close. Transmission should have the pan dropped and crud cleaned out and refilled with MERCOn V and new filter. I dont do the "flush", just change the oil. My 2001 has a torque converter drain, not sure the 02 has that. NEed both axles drained and refilled, and new fuel filter at 100K. Other than that, your ready to go.
2nd on the cruise switch recall. Take care when doing the plugs. Search broken plugs. When doing the trany filter install a drain plug in the pan. BTW; what are they asking? Price isn't everything but then again.
If it is at a Ford dealer get an Oasis report on it and see what, if anything, a dealer has done to it. The only real things that can go bad are the plugs spitting out and the COP's going bad, mainly from the heater hoses leaking on #3 and #4. I would certainly hope the plugs have already been changed once and should be done again within 20K miles.
"OASIS" shows only Ford paid repairs, i.e. warranty unless the previous owner also had a Ford Q.C.M. contract. I'd be more interested in the maintenance that was done. I bought my 97 F150 5.4L with a 100k on it and have had no problems, I did however have all fluids and filters changed before I even got it home. as far as recalls go you can check here Ford Recalls - Car Maintenance & Service Tips - Ford to see if the truck has any pending. Good luck with your decision.
