For All Ages - Flash Back - Buzz Words

, there were certain buzz words that had to be used when talking cars. (Cars being easier to write than vehicles). For some reason today I tripped over the phrase "4:11 Posi", there was this immediate rush of memories including places, sounds, sights, and smells. A splash across the screen of my mind of cars launching from a dead stop, both rear tires spinning and squeeling, belching smoke and motors roaring - it was on the only "Paved" Street in the area, it was Down Town at night, it was at the "Strip" side-by-side. What a rush.

Best regards to all,

The above refered to the velocity stacks or tubes used on the Hilboern Mechanical Fuel Injection System.
Stu Hilborn developed this system for racing it is 100% mechanical, each stack independent of the others, and because of those traits it was--- well lets just say challaging to tune.
The system had a intake tube, a butterfly valve, and a fuel control jet of "Pill" as it was known.
Fuel was supplied by a mechanical pump and controlled by the pill wich had to be matched to the engine-cam-atmospheric conditions-airflow-pressure and the color of Aunt Mables Delicates (If you didn't have an Aunt Mable - Go buy a carb.) Each Tube as stated above was independent and had to be individually tuned, It usuall took a year of work between each run.
That said everyone wanted one.
It was awhile before I was able to find a setup that I could afford, I was lucky enough to run into a guy one night that had one in the trunk of his car, along with some saws, drills and a set of Mags in the back seat. I picked up the Hilborn for $30.00 and a .25 Auto pocket gun of my Buddy.
Now we had all heard how you couldn't run a Hilborn on the street, just too difficult -- "They" haddn't met ME.
anyway I had got the setup on a Thrusday night and right after school on Friday I started to pull my intake to swap the Fuelie in. I was gonna be King of the Street that night.
I had a warmed over 28ty something smallblock with a 3sp rowed by a Keystone $19.95 Floorshift conversion with a shortened stick and a homemade custom Blue and White Plastic layered ****. I got it in plumbed, rigged and ready to go by midnight, all I had to do was get it started give it a quick tune and I was off to the races.
Please let me stop right here and say something about Stu Hilborn. He was a Brillent man, an excellent engineer and loved cars and racing. I can't for the life of me figure out why Mr. Hilborn diddn't hire a dedicated for the life of the unit meniacial square headed drooling murder to follow each unit and kill anyone who tried to use it on a non-dedicated-to-racing application. That little detail would have saved so many thousand apon thousands of hours of grief over the last 60 some years.
Anyway back to my expierence - I got up about 5AM Monday and went out to swap the battery and plates to my Ol 40 Poncho so I could get around for the week, I was beggining to suspect that I had gotten ripped by the guy who sold me that unit, because all I could do was get it to pop, sputter, leak, singe hair, gasp and cause a grass fire.
Oh if anyone spotts one for a Flatmotor let me know
