Tire Repair

I guess that I have to vent some. I just bought two tires a couple of months ago and they only have a couple of thousand miles on them(these are mounted on the rear of the truck. I caught a nail the other day just a little up on the sidewall and when I brought it to one place to be repaired they told me that it was not repairable!!! Damn!!! I had asked them to put a patch on the interior and no go. The shop guy told me that he could get me the same tire for $199!!! The hole is about an inch above the tread. I do carry a lot of weight towing a trailer, but wouldn't a double patch or something like that work?........If it didn't then I would get the new tire. Anyone have any thoughts on this? They are 16" new Wranglers. I do need to be safe though.

No tire shop will take the risk of letting you go with a sidewall repair that they did. The liability is just too great. You will just have to bite the bullet and get another tire. Try; Currently Available Prices and Sizes
Next time the road hazard warranty won't seem to be so expensive.

Why dont you break the tire down by hand and do the repair yourself? Its some work but would save you the $190.....

Sorry about your tire. The problem is the sidewall is where the tire works and it is too much liability for a shop to send someone down the road this way. Out here we have a tire shop initials LS and they give free hazard warranty when you buy from them. They have replaced more than one tire without question for us. Look for a similar shop to buy your next tires from.

Ive had to turn down angry customers when i used to refuse to patch a tire like that too.

It sucks man, but it really is a safety hazard to run it with a patch on the sidewall.

I dont quite get what you mean when you say the hole is an inch above the tread though..

If its on the tread, it should be fixable. Theres a grey area on the edge of the tread though where its touch and go if it can be safetly repaired or not...

The sidewalls are too flexible, and there's no metal to hold a plug on the inside of the tire. Relying on just a patch is dangerous. It stinks but it's true. The sidewall just isn't the right place to put a patch. Sorry.

if you are replacing one tire you might as well replace both of those goodyear wranglers, those tires are pretty mediocre at best. The sidewalls are really week and the tread pattern is horrible, you can get stuck in wet grass pretty easily.

Ok here's a suggestion. I've seen where a tire shop (Good????) had a tire sidewall with a small hole that was vulcanized/patched and a radial tube was then installed inside the tire. It worked like a charm! Just my $.02..Good luck!!

I would do that to an implement tire, I wouldnt do it for a truck tire personally.
