my first string is "slipping," i replaced the strings a week ago with some curt mangan light guages, have had no problems, was enjoying having tone back, today my fender rode 100 miles with me to my parents, when i took it out of the case, the first string was way out of tune, way low. i thought ok, and twisted the peg to bring it up to where it should be, after a minute i got a snap kind of sound-like a broken string. but upon investigation, it didn't break. i stuck the string back into the tuning peg and proceded to wind it down, but just as it gets to pitch it actually pulls itself out of the hole! i tried three times and no matter how i run the string it does the same thing! WTF!
what did i do wrong? or should i get a different set of strings?
Sounds like your not giving it enough wraps on the tuning peg or you need to add a wrap. What type of guitar is it,I know on my 12 string fender acoustic my nut is a little worn and if I use to lite of a string I have a problem with the G string slipping in the nut and it makes it a pain to tune or hold a tune with a new set of strings.

Or switch to vintage style tuning machines. I have one Tele with vintage and another came with standard. I switched the standard to vintage. They are not necessarily better, just different. But then again I prefer the vintage bridges too.

I second this.
When you say first string you mean the high e i assume? Some people say this but they are talking about the low e.
it is the high e (smallest string), i finally got it to take. probably needs more wraps, only has about 1 1/2(only my second time restringing one) I just passed one year of playing by a matter of days, and have had this hastings bought fender "starcaster"-which is just a cheaper version of an HSS fat strat for about 7 months.
good link horsepuller, all the times that i have been on fenders site i have not seen that page
