No, not necessarily. I had white stuff on my degas bottle but it stopped once I lowered the coolant down to the Min level. Not a drop in two years.

I got my truck back..............Now it's time for fun.

I modified my up pipe and my EGR cooler, also the head studs were installed. I haven't had a chance to really run it yet(Too much rain).

The dealership was SWEET! They had no problem covering the warranty work. I ask how the engine looked inside, he said that it was very clean and in great shape. My truck has 54,000 miles.

Glad to hear it. Did you take the EGR cooler out completely and install a bypass hose? You might consider a coolant filter too.

Actually I modified the EGR cooler itself, and sealed it with the ss blocker plates.

When I looked inside the cooler it was pretty clean I was surprised. My tech said that the cooler was still good, so I just welded it.

There's a thread I started,"Modified EGR Cooler". It goes a little more into detail of what's done.

I went to North Cascade Ford to have the work done.

I was pulling my 5'ver to the service center for the rv work. Well I decided to find a good hill and hammer down, not once but twice. The truck performed flawlessly. I notice that it stayed in the gear longer, also the EGT is slightly lower. Most importantly, no white residue on the bottle. If I were to pull the same hill before, there would have been alot of white residue.

Hey 04F-250mark, is your truck back? ARP studs?

In route between Cali to TN, this week, I was stuck in Grand Junction CO for 3 days while my HG was replaced. I had 99,400 miles on it and Ford wouldn't cover it under warranty because I had mods (e.g. ram air, turbo back mbrp exhaust, and tuner). So I want to a local PSD mechanic instead. They wouldn't install the arp head studs, instead they used the head gasket kit and bolt from international.

I have driven 400 miles so far and no overheating, however, my heater doesn't blow hot air consistently. When the HG went it wouldn't blow hot air at all. Don't know if the two are connected, but if they are I'm concerned. Also, never looked before, but when the engine is hot is the coolant reservoir suppose to be empty?

You should never have an empty reservoir with everything running correctly - an empty degas bottle (reservoir) means you are either overheating or leaking coolant (assuming it was filled correctly).

Actually when it's hot, the liquid is actually supposed to expand, which I believe is one of the reasons why the lowered the fill level of the reservoir in the hopes that it was because of expanding fluid blowing out of the coolant reservoir and not really any problem related to HG.

Two possible scenerios that come to my mind if your coolant reservoir is empty. 1. It's going somewhere, so there is a leak to deal with. Pressure test the system and that should be able to let you know if you have a leak period, it won't tell you where the leak is, but it will rule it out or confirm it. 2. The reservoir wasn't filled all the way and it's all going into the block when in operation. Easier to deal with then the 1st scenerio.

There could be more and probably are more scenerios(plain and simple overheating comes to mind), those are just the two that stand out in my mind.

My tuned 04 also only puked when towing. It was blown head gaskets, and the dealer used the ARP studs that I brought to him he and charged me a little for the extra labor (before you jump up and down and say "what extra labor", do some research). My dealer also does not do the "cab off" method of the head removal. My truck was fixed for the $100 deductible since it was still under the
5yr/100K warranty. This dealer was not the dealer that I purchased it from- they gave me the runaround that some of you guys are getting. Good luck.

Wait, your warranty would'nt cover it, so you went a outside diesel tech and paid out of pocket? If's that' the case, I would have told the tech that since I'm paying for it. I decide what's going to be installed, studs or bolts, NOT THE TECH.

I would have found someone else, that's what I did. I went thru two different Ford dealerships before I found one that would do the work. Hey the economy is in rough shape right now. There are shops out there that would have done the work.

Fastball,

The only sign that I had was the coolant puking out of the bottle. It only happened when I towed my trailer- you could smell the coolant while driving, especially uphill under load. Read some of the other posts and do your homework. If one dealer does not want to fix it try another- thats what I had to do. If you run a tuner or have a chip make sure that you return it to stock and follow the steps to erase any info prior to any dealer visit.
